Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Deadlock is Valve's six-versus-six third-person hero shooter and MOBA, set in an occult New York and played on Steam in an invite-only playtest since 2024, with no release date announced. This viki covers all 44 heroes with their abilities, builds and counters, every Weapon, Vitality and Spirit item, souls and the economy, the map and its lanes, Guardians, Walkers, the Mid-Boss, the Soul Urn and the Patron, ranked and Street Brawl, every big update through City Never Sleeps, and guides for new and climbing players, and every key paragraph plays the moment on YouTube that shows it.

Deadlock is Valve's six-versus-six third-person hero shooter and MOBA set in an occult New York, in an invite-only playtest on Steam since 2024 with no release date: its Steam page says "Planned Release Date: To be announced" and that "Access is currently limited to friend invite via our playtesters" (read Oct 26, 2026). Two teams of six heroes fight down three lanes of a city Valve calls the Cursed Apple, earning souls from troopers, monsters and kills, spending them on items, and pushing toward the enemy base to destroy its Patron. You aim and shoot like a shooter, but you farm, buy items and level abilities like Dota 2. Valve revealed the game on Aug 23, 2024 after months of leaks, and still calls it "in early development with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay". Unfinished as it is, it is one of the most played games on Steam: SteamDB measured an all-time peak of 303,347 players on Oct 16, 2026, the day the hero Violet arrived. The clip is a match on the City Never Sleeps map played as Rat King, in third person: a fight among the troopers, a ride along a zipline and fights through the city's buildings.

Wide teal and dark green painted artwork: two huge silhouettes loom over a city, one with antlers raising a fist, the other the Statue of Liberty's crowned head and torch; across the middle a wheel-shaped emblem with an eye and the word DEADLOCK in cream serif capitals.
Deadlock's Steam capsule: the cream Deadlock logo with its round eye emblem over a green and blue painting of a giant figure with antlers and the Statue of Liberty above a city. Valve

Is Deadlock out?

Deadlock is not released. Valve has not announced a release date, a price or a business model, and the Steam page reads "This game is not yet available on Steam" beside an "Add to your wishlist" button (Steam, read Oct 26, 2026). What exists is a free, invite-only playtest: you cannot buy Deadlock or find it in Steam search, and you get in when a Steam friend who already plays clicks "Invite your friends" in the game's start menu (Destructoid, Oct 17, 2026). The How to Get an Invite page walks through it step by step.

Valve's own words on its plans came with City Never Sleeps. Its Sep 29, 2026 post thanks players for their support "despite the game being unfinished" and lists "progression and hero/hideout customizations" as features it wants to change with feedback "before the game is fully released". Release Date and Playtest collects everything Valve and the press have said about a release, including Vi.ki's best-guess launch clock, which is our own estimate and not Valve's.

What a match is

A standard match is six heroes against six on one symmetrical map of New York, the Amber team against the Sapphire team. Since the Map Rework of Feb 25, 2025 the map has three lanes instead of four, and since City Never Sleeps (Sep 29, 2026) they are named York (yellow), Broadway (blue) and Greenwich (green), with four Districts between them: Theater, Chinatown, Haunted Lot and Plaza. Map and Lanes covers the layout, the ziplines that carry heroes back to their lanes, and the teleporters and jump pads.

Waves of troopers march down every lane, and each one you kill drops souls, the game's single currency and experience. Souls buy items and raise your hero's power and Ability Points; you also earn them from the monster camps that City Never Sleeps renamed Haunts, from breakable crates, from kills and from objectives. Every player started with 600 souls as of the Nov 21, 2025 update. Souls and Economy, Neutral Camps and Jungle and Ability Points and Leveling explain where souls come from and what they unlock.

Each lane is defended by objectives that fall in order: a Guardian, then a Walker, then a pair of Base Guardians, after which the base's Shrines can be attacked, and finally the Patron, the enemy team's god, whose death ends the match (Valve, May 22, 2026). The Mid-Boss in the center pit drops the Rejuvenator, which brings dead teammates back faster, and the Soul Urn is a separate objective you carry for souls. See Objectives, Mid-Boss and Rejuvenator and Soul Urn. Matches measured by deadlock-api between Oct 12 and Oct 26, 2026 lasted 36 minutes 22 seconds on average.

Items are where most decisions happen. The shop sells three categories, Weapon, Vitality and Spirit, in four tiers costing 800, 1,600, 3,200 and 6,400 souls, and a hero holds 9 items plus 3 Flex Slots, one unlocked for each enemy Walker your team kills (Nov 21, 2025 update). Items and Shop explains the shop itself.

Heroes

Deadlock has 44 heroes as of Oct 26, 2026, each with a gun and four abilities, the fourth an ultimate. Valve grows the roster in batches and, since 2025, lets players vote on the order. The Heroes page lists all of them with the date each arrived; Hero Tier List collects dated tier lists from outlets and measured win rates, and Best Heroes for Beginners gathers the heroes outlets recommend for a first game.

Twenty-one heroes were in the closed playtest before the reveal: Abrams, Bebop, Dynamo, Grey Talon, Haze, Infernus, Ivy, Kelvin, Lady Geist, Lash, McGinnis, Mo & Krill, Paradox, Pocket, Seven, Shiv, Vindicta, Viscous, Warden, Wraith and Yamato (PCGamesN, Jan 17, 2025). Mirage followed on Sep 26, 2024, and four heroes from the experimental Hero Labs mode joined normal matchmaking on Jan 17, 2025: Holliday, Vyper, Calico and The Magnificent Sinclair.

The first voted batch, Six New Heroes, arrived one every other day from Aug 18 to Aug 29, 2025: Mina, Billy, The Doorman, Paige, Drifter and Victor. Old Gods, New Blood added Rem, Graves, Silver, Venator, Celeste and Apollo between Jan 26 and Feb 12, 2026. City Never Sleeps added Rat King, Baba, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Violet and Nurse Harrow between Oct 2 and Oct 20, 2026. Players cast over 110 million votes in that last round, by Valve's count.

How to play

New players should start with the Beginner's Guide, which covers the goal, last hits, parrying, buying and grouping in the order you meet them. The early game is the lane phase, explained in the Laning Guide: securing trooper souls, denying the enemy's, and trading damage with the heroes across from you. After the lanes break, Macro and Rotations covers moving around the map, farming, and choosing between objectives, the Mid-Boss and the Urn.

Deadlock rewards movement more than most MOBAs. Heroes dash, double jump, wall jump, slide, mantle and ride ziplines (GamingOnLinux, Aug 30, 2024), and a well-timed parry stuns an enemy who swings at you with a heavy melee for about two seconds, as Esports.gg measured it. Movement and Combat has the numbers behind stamina, melee, damage types and respawns, dated by patch.

Items and builds

Every hero can buy any item, so builds change from game to game. The three item pages list everything sold, tier by tier: Weapon Items (gun damage, fire rate, ammo), Vitality Items (health, resistances, healing, movement) and Spirit Items (ability damage, cooldowns, range). On Oct 26, 2026 the shop held 156 items in the game files: 53 Weapon, 54 Vitality and 49 Spirit.

Builds and Itemization explains how outlets build: gun or spirit, when to buy vitality, which items to buy by phase and when to sell. Counter Items lists the answers to specific threats, such as anti-heal against lifesteal, cleanses against stuns and silences against ability-heavy heroes.

Modes and ranked

The Matchmaking Update of Jul 30, 2026 split play into Standard Mode, which is unranked, and Ranked Mode with seasons and twelve named ranks from Obscurus (uncalibrated) to Eternus. To enter Ranked you need 60 Standard wins and at least three heroes with 15 wins each. Valve moved the end of Season 1 to Nov 5, 2026 at 2pm PDT, with the next season starting right after. Ranked and Matchmaking has every rank and rule.

Street Brawl is Valve's fast mode from Old Gods, New Blood: "a quick 4v4 battle for the city over a best-of-five match", in which players draft items instead of farming (Valve, Jan 22, 2026). Game Modes covers the rest: bot matches, Custom Match, Explore NYC, the Sandbox and its training tools, and the Hideout, the personal lobby that replaced the menu screen in Aug 2025.

Updates

Valve patches Deadlock often and in public. In 2024 it shipped a major patch about every two weeks; on Jan 8, 2025 it dropped the fixed schedule for larger updates "a little bit more spaced out". The big ones since are the Map Rework (Feb 25, 2025), the Shop Rework (May 8, 2025), Six New Heroes (Aug 18, 2025), Old Gods, New Blood (Jan 22, 2026), the Matchmaking Update (Jul 30, 2026) and City Never Sleeps (Sep 29, 2026), with smaller gameplay updates and "Minor Update" posts between them. Patches and Updates lists them all, newest first.

The two most recent big updates have their own pages. City Never Sleeps Update rebuilt the look of the map, turned neutral camps into Haunts, added the four Districts, a new HUD and accessibility options, and six heroes. Old Gods New Blood Update replaced the Patrons and bases, added Street Brawl and six heroes. Hero Voting explains how players chose the order of each batch, from nearly 6 million votes in Aug 2025 to over 110 million in Oct 2026.

Status and players

Deadlock has never been on sale, yet its player counts rival released hits. SteamDB's chart shows a first peak of 171,490 on Sep 2, 2024, a long fall to daily peaks between about 11,700 and 23,500 from January to mid-August 2025, and a climb with each update since. City Never Sleeps set a new record of 228,086 on Sep 29, 2026; Solomon's release on Oct 9 took it past Team Fortress 2's all-time peak; and Violet's on Oct 16 set the current record of 303,347. The chart at the top of this page is SteamDB's measured data, and Steam Player Count explains each jump.

Development History tells the story from the "Citadel" and "Neon Prime" codenames through the leaks of May 2024 and the Aug 23, 2024 reveal to Valve's Sep 29, 2026 note on what is left to build. Release Date and Playtest covers what "early development" means for players today.

The world

Deadlock's New York is the Cursed Apple, a city where magic, monsters and occult industry are part of daily life. Its heroes are detectives, monster hunters, vampires, gargoyles, a demonic goat and a nurse from the Marble Hill Possession Ward, all drawn into a ritual in which two ancient Patrons, the Hidden King and the Archmother, compete to be summoned (Valve, Jan 22, 2026). Lore and Setting gathers what Valve's own texts say about the city, its factions and each hero.

Setup

Deadlock runs on 64-bit Windows; its Steam page lists every other system requirement as "TBD" (Steam appdetails, read Oct 26, 2026). Settings and Performance gathers the settings outlets recommend, launch options, and notes on Steam Deck and Linux. Controls and Keybinds lists the default keys, controller support and the accessibility options City Never Sleeps added. Mods covers the cosmetic mods players install from GameBanana, which Valve does not officially support.

Gameplay

  • Ability Points and Leveling

In Deadlock your soul total is your level: at set soul counts you unlock your four abilities (at 0, 500, 1,400 and 3,200 souls above the start) or earn an Ability Point, 32 in all by 48,600, exactly enough for every upgrade at 1, 2 and 5 points each.

  • Game Modes

Deadlock has three matchmaking modes on Oct 26, 2026 (Standard, Ranked and the 4v4 Street Brawl) plus bot matches, Custom Matches, Explore NYC, the Sandbox and the Hideout for practice. Hero Labs, an experimental mode for unfinished heroes, has been paused since Aug 2025.

  • Map and Lanes

Deadlock's map is one occult New York with three lanes since Feb 25, 2025: York (yellow), Broadway (blue, the middle) and Greenwich (green), with four Districts between them since City Never Sleeps (Theater, Chinatown, Haunted Lot and Plaza) and a base at each end.

  • Mid-Boss and Rejuvenator

Deadlock's Mid-Boss sits in the Pit at the center of the map from the first second of a match, with 13,000 base health; the team that kills it gets 3,000 souls, 2 permanent buffs each and a Rejuvenator crystal whose buff lasts 3 minutes, and it respawns 7 minutes later.

  • Movement and Combat

Deadlock heroes move with stamina-based dashes and air jumps, free slides, wall jumps, mantles and out-of-combat sprint, and fight with guns, abilities, light and heavy melee and a parry that stuns an attacking meleer. Most heroes have 3 stamina, a ground dash covers 10 meters and a dash jump 19, and headshots deal 1.65 times damage (Valve's notes and the game files, as of Oct 26, 2026).

  • Neutral Camps and Jungle

Deadlock's jungle is the neutral camps between the lanes, called Haunts since City Never Sleeps (Sep 29, 2026): weak camps first spawn at 2:00, medium at 5:00 and strong at 8:00, alongside crates, Buff Containers and Sinner's Sacrifice soul vaults.

  • Objectives

You win a Deadlock match by destroying the enemy Patron in its base. To reach it, a team breaks a lane's Guardian, Walker and pair of Base Guardians, then two Shrines, and each enemy Walker it kills unlocks a Flex Slot for every player.

  • Ranked and Matchmaking

Deadlock's Ranked Mode, added on Jul 30, 2026, has 11 ranks from Initiate to Eternus (plus the uncalibrated Obscurus), each with six subranks. To queue you need 60 Standard wins and at least 3 heroes with 15 Standard wins each; Season 1 ends Nov 5, 2026.

  • Soul Urn

Deadlock's Soul Urn spawns at 10 minutes and every 5 minutes after at one end of the map; a hero picks it up with a melee hit and carries it to the drop-off at the opposite end for 250 souls plus 70 per minute of match time and 4 permanent buffs (rules since Jun 30, 2026).

  • Souls and Economy

Souls are Deadlock's only currency and its experience: they buy items and level your hero. Most come from lane troopers and their orbs, then hero kills, Haunts, objectives and breakables, and a losing team earns up to 25% more.

  • Street Brawl

Street Brawl is Deadlock's 4v4 best-of-five mode, added on Jan 22, 2026: one lane, rounds of a few minutes, no farming, and three items drafted from a random set each round. The first team to win three rounds wins the match.

Guides

  • Beginner's Guide

To play Deadlock well from your first match, farm souls from trooper waves and orbs, deny the enemy's orbs, parry heavy melee, follow the shop's builds, spend Ability Points on your main damage ability, and turn every won fight into an objective. Deadlock is Valve's invite-only playtest, and these rules are as of Valve's Oct 14, 2026 patch.

  • Best Heroes for Beginners

Seven is the Deadlock hero outlets most often recommend to new players, with Victor, Ivy, McGinnis, Abrams and Infernus also named; Seven and Victor also win about 54% to 55% of matches in deadlock-api's Oct 2026 data, low ranks included. Outlets say to leave Celeste, The Doorman, Lash, Yamato, Paradox and Viscous until later.

  • Builds and Itemization

A Deadlock build is the order of items a hero buys with souls: gun builds stack Weapon items, spirit builds stack Spirit items, and every hero adds Vitality. Investment bonuses jump once 4,800 souls are spent in a category, and builds change to counter the enemy team.

  • Counter Items

Deadlock's counter items answer specific threats: Healbane, Toxic Bullets, Decay, Inhibitor, Crippling Headshot and Spirit Burn cut enemy healing; Dispel Magic, Divine Barrier, Unstoppable and Indomitable answer stuns and debuffs; Knockdown, Silencer, Cursed Relic and Disarming Hex shut heroes down.

  • Hero Tier List

In Deadlock's October 2026 meta, Graves and Rat King have the highest measured win rates (about 55% in Ranked, deadlock-api, Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026), while outlet tier lists disagree: Dexerto's top tier (Oct 9) includes Abrams, Haze, Yamato, Victor, Billy, Graves and Celeste, and Mobalytics' expert list (Oct 22) puts Baba, Celeste, Rem and Nurse Harrow on top.

  • Laning Guide

In Deadlock's lane phase, two heroes share each of three lanes, farm trooper waves that come every 25 seconds, shoot the soul orb that flies up from each dying trooper to secure it (or your own trooper's orb, to deny it), and pick up the ground orb that holds the other half. Trade with abilities, stay away from the enemy Guardian early, and leave lane to farm camps once the wave is pushed, usually around 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Macro and Rotations

Deadlock's mid game is won by turning every won fight into an objective, keeping your lanes pushed before you rotate, farming camps between waves, and timing the shared objectives: the Unstable Rift about every 7 minutes, the Soul Urn at 10 minutes and every 5 after, and the Mid-Boss, which deadlock-api's Oct 2026 data shows first falling at about 28 minutes.

  • Abrams

Abrams is Deadlock's shotgun brawler and tank: he charges into close combat with Shoulder Charge, heals off enemies with Siphon Life and stuns whole groups with his Seismic Impact ultimate. He is one of the original heroes and rated the easiest of Valve's three complexity tiers.

  • Grey Talon

Grey Talon is a long-range marksman in Deadlock who pokes with a bow, Charged Shot and Spirit Snare traps, and whose Guided Owl ultimate gives him permanent Spirit Power for every hero it kills. He is one of the original heroes, in the playtest before Valve revealed Deadlock on Aug 23, 2024.

  • Haze

Haze is a stealthy assassin in Deadlock who puts targets to sleep with Sleep Dagger, slips in invisible with Smoke Bomb and shreds them with stacking Fixation damage and her Bullet Dance ultimate. She is one of the original heroes and one of the most picked, in 43.8% of normal matches from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026.

  • Heroes

Deadlock has 44 playable heroes on Oct 26, 2026: 22 from the 2024 playtest, four from Hero Labs in Jan 2025, and three sets of six added by player vote in Aug 2025, Jan to Feb 2026 and Oct 2026. Nurse Harrow, on Oct 20, 2026, is the newest.

Overview

  • Deadlock

Deadlock is Valve's six-versus-six third-person hero shooter and MOBA set in an occult New York, in an invite-only playtest on Steam since 2024 with no release date. It has 44 heroes as of Oct 26, 2026, and reached an all-time peak of 303,347 Steam players on Oct 16, 2026, even though you can only join through a friend's invite.

  • Development History

Deadlock grew out of Valve projects reported under the codenames Citadel and Neon Prime, leaked in May 2024 during a closed playtest, and was revealed by Valve on Aug 23, 2024. Since then Valve has rebuilt its map, shop, Patrons and matchmaking in public, added 23 heroes, and said on Sep 29, 2026 that progression and customization are still to come before full release.

  • How to Get an Invite

To play Deadlock you need an invite from a Steam friend who already has it: they click "Invite your friends" in the game's start menu and pick you, and Valve says invites typically arrive within one to two days as a Steam notification. Deadlock cannot be bought, has no waitlist and does not appear in Steam search.

  • Lore and Setting

Deadlock is set in the Cursed Apple, Valve's occult, alternate-history New York, where every match is a ritual in which two Patrons, the Hidden King and the Archmother, compete to be summoned. Valve tells its story in short hero texts and update pages rather than a campaign, and has given no year for the setting.

  • Release Date and Playtest

Deadlock has no release date: as of Oct 26, 2026 its Steam page says "Planned Release Date: To be announced", and the game is an invite-only playtest in early development with temporary art and experimental gameplay. Valve's Sep 29, 2026 post lists progression and hero and Hideout customization as work still to do before full release.

  • Steam Player Count

Deadlock's all-time peak is 303,347 concurrent Steam players on Oct 16, 2026, the day Violet was released, as SteamDB measured. On Oct 26, 2026 it was 9th on Steam with a 24-hour peak of 267,268, although it is still an invite-only playtest.

Setup

  • Controls and Keybinds

Deadlock plays on WASD with Space to jump, Left Shift to dash, Left Ctrl to crouch or slide, 1 to 4 for abilities, Z, X and C for active items, Q to melee and F to parry. Controllers work through Steam Input with official Standard, Gyro and FlickStick schemes.

  • Mods

Deadlock mods are unofficial, client-side files, mostly hero skins, sounds and HUD changes, shared on GameBanana and installed as .vpk files in an addons folder or with a mod manager. Valve offers no mod support and has made no public statement on mods.

  • Settings and Performance

Deadlock has no published system requirements: on Oct 26, 2026 Steam lists them as "TBD" apart from a 64-bit Windows PC. Dexerto's competitive settings are Borderless Window, Direct3D 11, NVIDIA Reflex on, VSync off and most quality options low or off.

Updates

  • City Never Sleeps Update

City Never Sleeps is Deadlock's Sep 29, 2026 update: a new look for the whole map, neutral camps turned into Haunts, four Districts, a new HUD and accessibility options, and six heroes released by player vote from Oct 2 to Oct 20, 2026.

  • Hero Voting

Deadlock's hero voting lets players choose the order in which a big update's new heroes unlock. Valve has run three votes (Aug 2025, Jan to Feb 2026, Oct 2026); the latest, for City Never Sleeps, drew over 110 million votes and ended with Nurse Harrow on Oct 20, 2026.

  • Old Gods New Blood Update

Old Gods, New Blood is Deadlock's Jan 22, 2026 update: new Patrons and bases, the 4v4 mode Street Brawl, a revamped postgame with an MVP screen, and six heroes (Rem, Graves, Silver, Venator, Celeste and Apollo) released by player vote from Jan 26 to Feb 12, 2026.

  • Patches and Updates

Deadlock's latest big update is City Never Sleeps (Sep 29, 2026), and its latest patch is the Oct 14, 2026 minor update that nerfed Baba and buffed Deadman Danny. Valve ships a named major update every few months and small balance patches every week or two in between.
