Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Drifter

Drifter is a Deadlock assassin, an ancient vampire who hunts isolated enemies with Bloodscent, teleports behind them with Stalker's Mark, tears them apart with Rend and blinds them with Eternal Night. Valve added him on Aug 27, 2025.

Drifter is a Deadlock assassin who hunts lone enemies: Bloodscent tracks heroes with no ally near, Stalker's Mark bleeds a target and lets him teleport behind it, Rend tears into it, and his ultimate, Eternal Night, blinds up to two heroes. Valve introduced him on Aug 27, 2025 as "a nameless horror known only as the Drifter", the fifth of the Six New Heroes of 2025 that players voted into the game. He is one of 44 Heroes on Oct 26, 2026 and among the more popular: deadlock-api measured him in 34.7% of matches from Oct 15 to 26, 2026.

Abilities

Key Ability What it does Cooldown
1 Rend A 50-degree swipe out to 16 m for spirit damage; within 8 m it deals melee damage instead 16s
2 Stalker's Mark A mark that bleeds the first target for 2% of its max health per second for 5s; recast to teleport behind it 26s
3 Bloodscent Passive: heroes with no ally within 20 m are isolated, leave a trail and take +15% damage from him; the active tracks up to 2 heroes for 10s Passive with an active
4 Eternal Night Wraps up to 2 enemy heroes within 100 m in darkness for 6.5s, cutting their vision to 15 m; they count as isolated 145s

Rend is his main damage button. Since Valve's Mar 6, 2026 rework it deals melee damage at close range and spirit damage farther out. Its upgrades in the game files are T1 +40 damage, T2 -8s cooldown, and T3 55% of his heavy melee damage added and a 2s silence on close targets.

Stalker's Mark is his way in. The mark has to hit, which Mobalytics' guide calls hard from range, and while the target bleeds he can recast it to appear behind them. Its T1 is -8% bullet resist, T2 -10s cooldown and +3s duration, and T3 +1.5% bleed and -40% incoming healing (game files).

Bloodscent is the passive that makes him snowball. Every isolated hero who dies near him gives him +3% weapon damage for the rest of the match, whether he gets the kill or the assist (the Mar 6, 2026 rule). Its T1 gives +3 m/s near an isolated hero, T2 heals 24% of missing health and 2 stamina when one dies, and T3 adds +11% amplified damage (game files).

Eternal Night is a hunting ultimate. The darkness reveals its targets to him for 3 seconds, makes them isolated and speeds his sprint by 2 m/s. Its T1 is +10 m/s sprint, T2 -40s cooldown, and T3 +2.5s duration and a third target (game files).

How to play

Drifter is played as a close-range assassin who picks off heroes caught alone. His shotgun hits hard up close but its damage falls from 22 m to 60% at 27 m (game files). Mobalytics' guide names his strengths as "Really high gun damage", a simple kit and great play against lone enemies, and warns that he "has a very hard time coming back into the game if shut down early".

In lane, look for the enemy who strays from the trooper wave; Bloodscent shows them. Early Bloodscent stacks matter, since each one is permanent weapon damage.

In the mid game, roam with Eternal Night: blind two heroes, mark one, teleport in and Rend. Avoid long team fights, where Mobalytics says he has "very limited teamfighting ability".

Builds

Outlets build Drifter as a gun and melee assassin. Mobalytics' RinaVX build (updated May 1, 2026) goes glass cannon (Mobalytics):

Phase Items
Early Close Quarters, Kinetic Dash, Healbane, Slowing Hex, Toxic Bullets
Mid Enduring Speed, Veil Walker, Point Blank, Hunter's Aura ("a natural fit"), Bullet Lifesteal, Vampiric Burst
Late Juggernaut, Spellbreaker, Plated Armor, Glass Cannon, Crippling Headshot
Situational Healing Rite, Metal Skin

Source: Mobalytics (Rina), May 1, 2026; it predates Valve's Jul to Aug 2026 nerfs.

Players today build more melee. deadlock-api measured Stalker in 84% of Drifter games, Melee Lifesteal in 75%, Spirit Strike in 64%, Spirit Snatch in 63% and Hunter's Aura in 62%, which won 53.3% of those games (Oct 15 to 26, 2026). The items are in Weapon Items, Vitality Items and Spirit Items; the shop in Items and Shop.

Counters and matchups

Staying together counters Drifter. Mobalytics' guide says dodging Stalker's Mark leaves him without his movement, and that teams should stick together during pushes and during Eternal Night, since isolation is what powers him. Mobalytics' Street Brawl guide suggests Disarming Hex against him (Mobalytics, Aug 27, 2026); more in Counter Items.

His measured matchups are close to even. deadlock-api's matchup measurement (Oct 15 to 26, 2026) has Drifter winning 43.3% against Graves, 44.7% against Paige and Rat King, 45.1% against Kelvin and 45.7% against Victor, and 56.5% against Sinclair, 56.1% against Mina, 55.8% against Pocket, 55.6% against Mirage and 55.2% against Rem.

Lore

Drifter is an ancient vampire roaming America. Valve's reveal gives his line "Everyone's got weaknesses, but mercy ain't one of mine", and the game's own hero text (deadlock-api) says he "has naked contempt for vampiric laws and tradition", which has made him "a marked man all over the North American Baronies". Mobalytics names his voice actor as Matt Mercer. More in Lore and Setting.
