Calico
Calico is Deadlock's shadow assassin, who roams as her sphinx cat Ava, jumps on targets with Leaping Slash, bursts them with Gloom Bombs and turns untargetable with her Return to Shadows ultimate. She joined regular matchmaking from Hero Labs on Jan 17, 2025.
Calico is a Deadlock assassin who hunts enemies one by one: she roams unseen as her shadow cat Ava, leaps onto a target with Leaping Slash, bursts them with Gloom Bombs and her shotgun, and escapes or finishes with Return to Shadows, an ultimate that makes her untargetable. Valve moved her from Hero Labs into regular matchmaking on Jan 17, 2025, together with Holliday, Vyper and Sinclair, and its post described "a feared assassin" who weaves in and out of combat. Valve's game files rate her complexity 2 of 3 among the Heroes.

| 1 | Gloom Bombs | Throws 4 bombs, each 45 spirit damage after 0.75s | 14s |

Gloom Bombs throws four bombs that detonate after 0.75 seconds for 45 spirit damage each in 3 m, and an enemy hit by several takes 65% damage from each extra bomb, per the game files as of Oct 26, 2026. T1 cuts 3s from the cooldown, T2 makes each bomb that touches an enemy cut their melee resist by 6% for 6 seconds, stacking, and T3 adds three more bombs. Valve's Jun 11, 2026 update set that T2 at -6% for 6s and made the stacks add up.
Leaping Slash dashes Calico up to 9 m, even straight up, and slashes every enemy in a 4 m circle for melee damage, healing her 40 if she hits a hero, per the game files as of Oct 26, 2026. T1 adds 25 to the heal, T2 gives +200 souls for any hero killed within 3 seconds of the hit, and T3 adds 60 damage and refunds half the cooldown on a hero hit. Mobalytics' Calico build by rina says the "reworked Leaping Slash has made Calico much easier to play".
Ava turns Calico into her shadow cat for 15 seconds, hidden from the enemy minimap, with move speed that climbs from +30% to +65% over 4 seconds, per the game files as of Oct 26, 2026. Damage from an enemy hero resets the speed bonus and stops her using Ava again for 6 seconds. T1 adds 15s, T2 adds 40% maximum speed and 15 health regen, and T3 gives a damage bonus that grows to 18% over 10 seconds as Ava and lingers 6 seconds after.
Return to Shadows is Calico's ultimate: she instantly becomes an untargetable shadow with +20% move speed, dealing 150 spirit damage in 7.5 m, and deals it again when she returns 3 seconds later, on a 115-second cooldown, per the game files as of Oct 26, 2026. T1 cuts 20s from the cooldown, T2 adds 75 damage and 20% move speed, and T3 heals her 450 and refunds all her ability cooldowns when it ends. Valve's Jun 30, 2026 update raised every ultimate's cooldown by 15%, which took it from 100 to 115 seconds.
How to play
Calico is a roaming assassin who picks off isolated enemies. Mobalytics' Calico guide lists her strengths as high burst damage, strong sustain and being "an amazing roamer with access to tunnels", and her weaknesses as poor Haunt camp clearing, weakness to silences and low base health.
In lane she pokes with Leaping Slash, which heals her on every hero hit, and with her shotgun, whose center pellet has counted for headshots since Valve's Mar 6, 2026 update. Rina's build buys Melee Lifesteal and Spirit Strike early to make those trades pay. The Laning Guide covers the shared basics.
Her ganks run on Ava: as a cat she is fast and hidden from the minimap, so she can cross the map and arrive unannounced. A typical kill is Leaping Slash onto a target, Gloom Bombs and melee while the melee resist debuff stacks, then Return to Shadows to dodge the response and hit again on the way back.
Return to Shadows is as much an escape as a finisher. With T3 it heals 450 and resets every cooldown, so she can come out of it and run the whole combo again.
Builds
Calico builds melee Vitality Items and Spirit Items with a few Weapon Items; Items and Shop covers the shop. In deadlock-api's measurement of her games from Oct 15 to 26, 2026, Melee Lifesteal was bought in 97%, Spirit Strike in 94%, Stalker in 92%, Spirit Snatch in 91%, Cold Front in 88%, Arctic Blast in 76% and Sprint Boots in 75%; games with Boundless Spirit (54%) won 54.0%.
| Phase | Items (Mobalytics' Assassin Calico by rina, Jul 26, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Early | Melee Lifesteal, Spirit Strike, Cold Front, Stalker, Reactive Barrier |
| Mid | Lifestrike, Spirit Snatch, Shadow Weave, Fortitude |
| Late | Siphon Bullets, Colossus, Scourge |
| Situational | Healing Rite; Dispel Magic against Infernus' Afterburn and Toxic Bullets; Healbane against Victor or Abrams |

The build leans into close-range melee and bruiser items because Leaping Slash now carries her into melee range, and pairs Fortitude with Ava. Builds and Itemization explains how to load a build by its ID.
Counters and matchups
Calico is countered by anything that stops her jump. Mobalytics' Calico guide says Slowing Hex and Billy's Chain Gang disable Leaping Slash, Silence Wave and Focus Lens stop both Leaping Slash and Return to Shadows, and height (Warp Stone, jump pads) keeps her from closing the gap.
Slowing Hex is the counter item most named against her: Mobalytics' Street Brawl guide (Aug 27, 2026) lists it against Calico too. Her low base health also makes burst damage effective once she has committed.
The measured matchups from deadlock-api's hero-versus-hero data, Oct 15 to 26, 2026, show Calico's lowest win rates against Graves (40.4%), Victor (42.3%), Kelvin (42.3%), Paige (43.0%) and Rat King (43.4%), and her highest against Sinclair (55.1%), Mirage (53.7%), Paradox (53.6%), Shiv (53.5%) and Grey Talon (52.6%). These are raw rates: Graves and Rat King win most of their games against everyone.

- Nov 21, 2025: clip from 10 to 12 shells; Gloom Bombs cooldown from 12s to 14s (Valve).

Lore
Calico was once a decorated member of The Baxter Society, which hunts monsters, and left when she realized that killing monsters for free paid less than killing people for money, per the game files. Valve's Jan 17, 2025 post says players can possess her sphinx Ava "and run around as a cat". The setting is on Lore and Setting.
