Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Grey Talon

Grey Talon is a long-range marksman in Deadlock who pokes with a bow, Charged Shot and Spirit Snare traps, and whose Guided Owl ultimate gives him permanent Spirit Power for every hero it kills. He is one of the original heroes, in the playtest before Valve revealed Deadlock on Aug 23, 2024.

Grey Talon is a Deadlock marksman who fights from long range with a bow, piercing Charged Shots and Spirit Snare traps, then finishes low enemies with a steerable owl that makes him permanently stronger for every hero it kills. Valve's game files sum him up as "Delivers long range skill-shots" (deadlock-api's copy of the game files, Oct 26, 2026). He is one of the 21 original Heroes who were in the closed playtest before Valve's Aug 23, 2024 reveal, as PCGamesN's roster count shows. Deadlock itself is still an invite-only playtest in early development, and Valve has not announced a release date.

2 Rain of Arrows Leaps high and glides for 4s with 5-way multishot and +3 weapon damage 25s

4 Guided Owl A steered owl: 230 damage and a 0.75s stun in 12 m; +8 Spirit Power per hero it kills 125s

Source: the game files as of Oct 26, 2026 (deadlock-api, items); Rain of Arrows' cooldown and the owl's Spirit bonus were last set in Valve's Jun 30, 2026 update.

Charged Shot is Grey Talon's main poke: he holds the ability to draw a piercing arrow for 80 damage with 1.0 spirit scaling, on a 17s cooldown, in the game files as of Oct 26, 2026. T1 adds a second charge (4s between charges), T2 adds 54 damage, and T3 adds another 1.0 spirit scaling and cuts the charge delay by 3s.

Rain of Arrows is his escape and his aerial damage window: since Valve's May 22, 2026 rework he glides for 4s with five-way multishot, +3 weapon damage and +25% air jump and dash distance, on a cooldown Valve raised to 25s on Jun 30, 2026. T1 adds +3 weapon damage and a slow on hit for 1.5s (Valve wrote 30%; the game files list 24% after the Sep 16, 2026 cut of about 20% to every slow), T2 cuts 12s from the cooldown, and T3 grants 30% bullet and spirit lifesteal and 30% bullet evasion in the air.

Spirit Snare is his zoning tool. The trap arms in 2s and lasts 22s; an enemy who walks into its 6.5 m radius takes 25 damage and is Cursed for 2.25s and slowed 24%, per the game files as of Oct 26, 2026. A Charged Shot detonates it early with a 30% larger radius. T1 cuts 20s from the 34s cooldown, T2 makes victims take 15% more bullet damage for 10s, and T3 adds 1s of Curse and 1.5 m of radius.

Guided Owl is the ultimate that defines him. After a 1.5s cast he steers a spirit owl (holding W speeds it up) that explodes for 230 damage (0.94 spirit scaling) and a 0.75s stun in a 12 m radius; each enemy hero it kills grants him 8 Spirit Power for the rest of the match, down from 10 on Jun 30, 2026. T1 adds 85 damage, T2 cuts 40s from the 125s cooldown, and T3 kills any enemy left below 22% health after the hit (game files, Oct 26, 2026).

How to play

Grey Talon wants to stay far away. His bow keeps full damage to 18 m and falls off to 10% at 54 m, and his abilities reach farther still (game files, Oct 26, 2026). In lane, Mobalytics' build by rina (updated Oct 13, 2026) says to poke with Charged Shot and Rain of Arrows and to watch enemy health bars for Guided Owl kills. More lane basics are in the Laning Guide.

His best combo is Spirit Snare plus Charged Shot: the arrow "will instantly pop the Snare even if its not set", the same build notes, so a snare thrown at an enemy and shot at once is an instant Curse. In fights he plays behind a frontliner, since Mobalytics' Grey Talon guide lists his weaknesses as no mobility, weakness when behind and being an easy target in team fights.

His power grows with kills: on top of +1.6 Spirit Power per boon (game files, Oct 26, 2026), every owl kill adds 8, and the Guided Owl T3 execute is his biggest spike (Ability Points and Leveling).

Builds

Players build Grey Talon mostly as a spirit hero. Mobalytics' build by rina (Build ID 882391, updated Oct 13, 2026) is a "Spirit-sided Grey Talon build, very cookie-cutter looking for large burst damage with Charged Shot and Guided Owl". The items players actually buy agree: deadlock-api measured Extra Charge and Mystic Burst in 91% of his games, Improved Spirit 89%, Tankbuster 88%, Rapid Recharge 87%, Extra Spirit 78%, Compress Cooldown 73% and Boundless Spirit 72% (Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026), almost all of them Spirit Items. Spirit Burn, bought in 50% of games, carried a 53.5% win rate.

Rina's situational items answer specific threats: Indomitable or Ethereal Shift against Lash's Death Slam, Divine Barrier against Pocket's Affliction, and Counterspell, Dispel Magic (best against Infernus) or Metal Skin, mostly Vitality Items; a glass-cannon pivot into the Weapon Items Crippling Headshot, Lucky Shot or Glass Cannon is the other route. How the shop works is on Items and Shop and Builds and Itemization.

Counters and matchups

Mobile heroes counter Grey Talon. Mobalytics' guide says he "lacks horizontal mobility, making him an easy catch for mobile heroes", warns chasers to watch for traps, and tells laners not to linger at low health, since an owl kill feeds him Spirit. Knockdown shuts down Rain of Arrows; more on Counter Items.

deadlock-api's matchup measurement (Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026) found Grey Talon's lowest win rates against Graves (39.5%), Paige (40.9%), Kelvin (41.1%), Rat King (41.1%) and Victor (41.4%), and his highest against Sinclair (52.6%), Pocket (52.4%), Viscous (52.1%), Mina (52.0%) and The Doorman (51.7%). (Graves and Rat King top nearly every hero's worst list because they win most games.) Even so, Mobalytics' expert tier list (Oct 22, 2026) names Grey Talon as good into Rat King and Baba.

Outlets rank him low to middling: C tier at Dexerto (Oct 9, 2026), D at Dot Esports (Aug 25, 2026) and A in Mobalytics' expert list. deadlock-api measured a 45.1% win rate in Ranked (Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026). See the Hero Tier List.

Lore

Grey Talon's in-game biography makes him Wesley Grey Talon, a founding member of "The Baxter Society" who hunted monsters for close to 40 years before retiring to his wife and grandchildren, with dinner every Wednesday, until "Then he got the call." His bow is named "The Mourning Comes" (game files, Oct 26, 2026). The setting is on Lore and Setting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grey Talon good in Deadlock? Grey Talon is below average in Deadlock right now: deadlock-api measured a 46.70% win rate in normal matches from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026, and Dexerto ranked him C tier on Oct 9, 2026, though Mobalytics' expert list puts him in A.

What is the best Grey Talon build in Deadlock? Most Deadlock players build Grey Talon around Spirit Power: Extra Charge, Mystic Burst, Improved Spirit, Tankbuster, Rapid Recharge and Boundless Spirit are his most bought items (deadlock-api, Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026).

How do you counter Grey Talon in Deadlock? In Deadlock, Grey Talon has no horizontal mobility, so mobile heroes that close the distance beat him, and Knockdown stops his Rain of Arrows. Avoid his lane at low health: every Guided Owl kill gives him 8 permanent Spirit Power.

How does Spirit Snare work with Charged Shot? In Deadlock, shooting Grey Talon's own Spirit Snare with Charged Shot detonates the trap at once with a 30% larger radius, Cursing enemies inside for 2.25s (game files, Oct 26, 2026).

Is Grey Talon good for beginners in Deadlock? Esports.gg recommended Grey Talon as one of three Deadlock beginner heroes in Sep 2024 because he plays at long range; his complexity is 2 of 3 in the game files.
