Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Viscous

Viscous is a Deadlock goo hero who slows with Splatter, punches from range with Puddle Punch, saves allies inside The Cube and rolls through fights as a stunning Goo Ball. He is one of the 21 heroes of the 2024 playtest and won 45.98% of measured matches from Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026.

Viscous is a Deadlock hero, a goo creature who disrupts and protects: Splatter bounces goo that slows, Puddle Punch drops a giant fist from up to 40m away, The Cube encases an ally to save them, and his ultimate turns him into a Goo Ball that stuns whatever it hits. The game's own role line for him is "Rolls around deflecting bullets", in the game files as of Oct 26, 2026. He is one of the original heroes, in the game before Valve revealed it on Aug 23, 2024, and one of the 22 heroes PCGamesN counted before the January 2025 additions. From Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026 he won 45.98% of measured matches, 35th of 44 heroes, and appeared in 12.01% of them.

Splatter is his poke and zone control. It throws a goo ball that deals 55 damage (spirit scaling 0.7) in 5m and bounces twice, later hits dealing 50%, 38% and 26%, and leaves puddles for 10s that slow enemies 28% and give allies +60% slide distance, on a 26s cooldown, per the game files on Oct 26, 2026. T1 adds 36 damage and 1.5m, T2 cuts 14s, and T3 adds a bounce and 0.9 scaling. Valve's Jul 28, 2026 update cut its damage from 70 to 55 and raised its base bounces from 1 to 2.

The Cube is his save. It encases an ally or Viscous himself within 20m for 3s, blocking all damage and adding 40 health regen (spirit scaling 0.3); the target cannot act but can jump out early. The cooldown is 42s, in the game files. T1 gives +2.5 m/s and +30% stamina recovery for 8s afterward, T2 adds 25 regen and 1s, and T3 removes non-ultimate debuffs and cuts 20s. Valve shortened its cast range from 26m to 20m on Sep 16, 2026.

Puddle Punch is his long-range melee. A giant fist lands up to 40m away and punches everything within 4m, knocking up enemies and slowing them for 3s, dealing 20 damage plus 60% of his light melee; it can be parried, and allies hit get +30% air control. The cooldown is 24s, per the game files; Valve set that on Sep 16, 2026. The game files list a 24% slow on Oct 26, 2026, while Valve's Jul 28, 2026 note raised it to 30%. T1 adds a charge and 20 damage, T2 adds 1.5m and 60% lifesteal, and T3 cuts 14s and turns it into heavy melee damage.

Goo Ball is his ultimate and his engage. He becomes a goo ball for 11s with 35% bullet and spirit resist, dealing 110 damage (spirit scaling 1.0) and a 0.5s stun on impact, bouncing off walls, with a double jump, and able to use abilities and items while rolling. The cooldown is 150s in the game files on Oct 26, 2026; Valve's last Steam note on it, the Mar 6, 2026 update, set 130s. T1 cuts 25s, T2 adds 70 damage and 20% resists, and T3 adds 7s, 0.3s of stun and 0.2 scaling. Since that March update the ball can no longer carry the Soul Urn.

How to play

Viscous starts as a lane bully and grows into a hard-to-kill bruiser. Dexerto's guide (Mar 9, 2026) describes him as a "lane bully who hits harder than expected" who becomes an "unkillable bruiser by late game". In the lane it uses Splatter as the main poke: the goo procs spirit items and leaves the puddle slow for follow-up. Puddle Punch counts as a melee attack, so melee items trigger on it at range.

Mobalytics' Viscous guide calls him very tanky, a hero who saves allies with The Cube and disrupts with Splatter and Puddle Punch. It also lists his weaknesses: he is hard to learn, needs map knowledge and can accidentally save enemies. TheGamer (Aug 31, 2024) named him one of the harder heroes to learn.

The Cube decides team fights. Dexerto saves it for allies who are channeling or being focused, and casts it on Viscous himself when he is low or needs to clear debuffs. A cubed ally is out of the fight for its duration, so a badly timed Cube costs the team a player.

Goo Ball wins fights in tight spaces. Dexerto rolls through corridors and small rooms to bounce between walls and keep enemies stunned. Ability points go to Splatter first, then Puddle Punch, then The Cube in Dexerto's order.

Builds

Outlets build Viscous around melee and spirit, and players around cooldowns. Dexerto's build (Mar 9, 2026):

  • Early: Monster Rounds, Melee Lifesteal, Spirit Strike, Extra Charge, Restorative Shot
  • Mid: Ballistic Enchantment, Hunter's Aura, Spirit Snatch, Lifestrike, Healing Nova
  • Late: Glass Cannon, Lucky Shot, Vampiric Burst, Hollow Point, Escalating Resilience

The measured matches from Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026 (deadlock-api's item stats for Viscous) show Mystic Burst in 63% of his games, High-Velocity Rounds in 47% and Melee Lifesteal in 39% in lane; then Spirit Snatch (49%), Mystic Expansion (43%) and Tankbuster (41%); late Greater Expansion (32%), Transcendent Cooldown (31%), Superior Cooldown (31%) and Crushing Fists (20%). The items sit in Weapon Items, Vitality Items and Spirit Items; Items and Shop explains prices and slots.

Counters and matchups

Parrying Puddle Punch is the first counter. Mobalytics advises parrying it, staying off walls in lane, not chasing Goo Ball when there are more important targets, and treating a cubed ally as a numbers advantage, since that hero is out of the fight. See Counter Items for items that answer stuns and slows.

Strong early fighters beat him in the measured data. From Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026, deadlock-api measured his worst raw results against Graves (38.3%), Rat King (39.0%) and Victor (41.3%), and his best against Sinclair (53.3%), Mina (51.2%) and Pocket (51.1%). He did better in matches of Phantom and higher, winning 48.54% there (deadlock-api).

Lore

Viscous is a psychic sea anemone from the shadowline nexus under the Bermuda Triangle who, hunted by a predator called The Adversary, summons an ectoplasmic body of goo to fight back, as his hero text in the game files tells it. PCGamesN (Aug 9, 2026) describes him the same way, as a psychic sea anemone from the Bermuda Triangle. Lore and Setting covers the wider world.
