Laning Guide
In Deadlock's lane phase, two heroes share each of three lanes, farm trooper waves that come every 25 seconds, shoot the soul orb that flies up from each dying trooper to secure it (or your own trooper's orb, to deny it), and pick up the ground orb that holds the other half. Trade with abilities, stay away from the enemy Guardian early, and leave lane to farm camps once the wave is pushed, usually around 5 to 10 minutes.
Laning in Deadlock means farming the trooper waves in one of three lanes with a partner, securing the souls each dying trooper drops while denying the enemy's, and wearing down the opposing pair until you can take their Guardian. Since Valve's Jun 30, 2026 update, half of every trooper's souls fly up as an orb that you shoot to secure and the enemy can shoot to deny, and the other half falls to the ground for your team to collect. Lane troopers are the biggest source of souls in a match: deadlock-api measured 9,658 per player on average from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026. This guide gives the rules as of Valve's Oct 14, 2026 patch and what outlets advise, each named. Start with Beginner's Guide if you are new.

Lanes and pairs
Each team sends two heroes to each of the three lanes. Deadlock has had three lanes since the Map Rework of Feb 25, 2025, which, as PC Gamer put it, ended the solo lanes of the old four-lane map. The City Never Sleeps update named them York, Broadway and Greenwich, yellow, blue and green on the minimap. The map is on Map and Lanes.
In Ranked, lanes are fixed before the match. Under Valve's Jul 30, 2026 Matchmaking Update, you set lanes in the pre-game waiting area and cannot swap by zipline afterward, so talk about matchups there. See Ranked and Matchmaking.
Trooper waves
Troopers march down every lane in waves every 25 seconds, and every 20 seconds after 35 minutes (Mar 6, 2026). The game files list three kinds: a normal trooper with 300 health, a medic with 350 and a melee trooper with 400 (read Oct 26, 2026). Troopers heal 7 health a second out of combat, and during the lane phase they show through walls (May 8, 2025).
A trooper does not need your last hit to pay you. Since the Map Rework, a trooper's souls drop as long as a hero is nearby, and since Nov 21, 2025 "nearby" means within 45 meters. Its bounty is 100 souls plus 2 per minute of game time (Jun 30, 2026). Older guides that say troopers give nothing to a last hit after 10 minutes describe rules from 2024.
Securing and denying soul orbs
When a trooper dies, half of its souls fly up as an orb. Shoot the orb from an enemy trooper to secure those souls; shoot the orb from one of your own troopers that dies to deny it to the enemy. Valve raised this deniable half from 40% to 50% on Jun 30, 2026. Securing an orb also gives back ammo, since the Shop Rework.
The other half falls to the ground. Under the Nov 21, 2025 rules, the ground orb flies to you once you are within 18 meters, only one player needs to claim it, and it lasts 18 seconds, growing 2 seconds a minute to 40 seconds after 10 minutes. Enemy ground orbs show as faint colorless orbs that you cannot take, so a ground orb is never denied; only the flying half is contested.
Denying is a small but real edge. deadlock-api measured an average of 2.9 denies per player a match (3.2 in Ranked) and 186 souls lost to denies from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026, while 7,964 souls of the average player's trooper income came from orbs. Securing your own orbs matters more than denying theirs.
Medic troopers drop a medic pack when they die. It heals everyone within 30 meters for 13% of missing health (May 22, 2026) plus 75 and 2 per minute, so killing the enemy medic first takes their healing and gives you yours.
Sharing a lane
Two heroes near the same trooper split its souls. Valve's Nov 21, 2025 ratios give each hero 54% of the bounty when two are near, 36% each with three, and less after that, so a lane pair earns more together than one hero alone, but a third hero joining the lane costs everyone. When one partner leaves to farm a camp, the other takes the whole wave. More on income is on Souls and Economy.
Trading and pressure
Trade with abilities. Abilities in Deadlock cost no mana, only cooldown, so PC Gamer calls health the early-game resource: chip the enemy pair whenever your abilities are up, and an enemy who has to walk back to heal misses waves. PC Gamer also advises using the lane's cover rather than standing in the open.
Use melee and parry. Heavy melee has a visible wind-up, the cue for the enemy to parry, and a successful parry stuns for about two seconds per Esports.gg; parrying pauses your reload since Sep 16, 2026. Esports.gg adds that you can parry the Guardian's melee to stay aggressive. See Movement and Combat.
Respect the enemy Guardian. Guardians start a match with 50% extra damage resistance that falls to -50% over the first 12 minutes (May 22, 2026), so they are hardest to break early, and a Guardian turns on any enemy who shoots a hero within 15 meters of it. Valve's Nov 21, 2025 notes give Guardians 4,250 health; the game files read on Oct 26, 2026 list 5,500.
Winning and losing a lane
Read the lane by the soul totals under the hero portraits. PC Gamer advises pressing an advantage when you are ahead, and playing safe near your Guardian when behind, because every death feeds the enemy souls. Kills pay well early: first blood is worth 125 souls and a kill's base bounty is 200 (Jun 30, 2026).
Buy sustain if the lane is hard. PC Gamer suggests Healing Rite or Extra Regen, both sellable later, and Extra Regen is one of the earliest common purchases, bought at 5.0 minutes on average (deadlock-api, Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026). See Vitality Items.
Taking the enemy Guardian ends their lane. Its bounty, raised to 1,250 on Jun 30, 2026 and by 10% on Sep 16, 2026, now reads 1,375 in the game files, and the first objective of a match falls at 7 minutes 43 seconds on average (deadlock-api, Oct 2026). See Objectives.
When to leave the lane
Stay for roughly the first 5 to 10 minutes, then start moving. Esports.gg puts the lane phase at that length and warns against overpushing into enemy Guardians while it lasts. Mobalytics (Aug 28, 2026) advises pushing your wave, then clearing camps before the next one arrives, because "Lane creeps give more Souls than anything else in the game."
The map's timers pull you out. Small camps first spawn at 2:00, medium at 5:00 and large at 8:00 (game files, Oct 26, 2026), crates at 3:00, the Unstable Rift every 7 minutes, plus or minus 1, and the Soul Urn at 10:00. Mobalytics' Urn guide (Oct 10, 2026) says to push the wave just before it spawns and to leave your lane only if your partner can hold it. What comes next is on Macro and Rotations and Neutral Camps and Jungle.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need last hits in Deadlock? No: since Feb 25, 2025, Deadlock troopers drop souls whenever a hero is within 45 meters, but you must shoot the orb that flies up to secure half of them and collect the ground orb for the other half.
How do you deny in Deadlock? In Deadlock you deny by shooting the soul orb that flies up when one of your own troopers dies, before the enemy secures it; since Jun 30, 2026 it holds 50% of the trooper's souls.
How long is the lane phase in Deadlock? Deadlock's lane phase lasts about the first 5 to 10 minutes, per Esports.gg, and the first Guardian falls at 7 minutes 43 seconds on average in deadlock-api's Oct 2026 data.
Are there solo lanes in Deadlock? No: Deadlock has three lanes and six heroes a side, so each lane holds two heroes; the solo lanes went with the four-lane map in the Feb 25, 2025 Map Rework.
Can you swap lanes in Deadlock? In Deadlock's Ranked mode you set lanes in the pre-game area and cannot swap by zipline afterward, under Valve's Jul 30, 2026 Matchmaking Update.

Beginner's GuideTo play Deadlock well from your first match, farm souls from trooper waves and orbs, deny the enemy's orbs, parry heavy melee, follow the shop's builds, spend Ability Points on your main damage ability, and turn every won fight into an objective. Deadlock is Valve's invite-only playtest, and these rules are as of Valve's Oct 14, 2026 patch. -
Map and LanesDeadlock's map is one occult New York with three lanes since Feb 25, 2025: York (yellow), Broadway (blue, the middle) and Greenwich (green), with four Districts between them since City Never Sleeps (Theater, Chinatown, Haunted Lot and Plaza) and a base at each end. -
Ranked and MatchmakingDeadlock's Ranked Mode, added on Jul 30, 2026, has 11 ranks from Initiate to Eternus (plus the uncalibrated Obscurus), each with six subranks. To queue you need 60 Standard wins and at least 3 heroes with 15 Standard wins each; Season 1 ends Nov 5, 2026. -
Souls and EconomySouls are Deadlock's only currency and its experience: they buy items and level your hero. Most come from lane troopers and their orbs, then hero kills, Haunts, objectives and breakables, and a losing team earns up to 25% more.
-
Movement and CombatDeadlock heroes move with stamina-based dashes and air jumps, free slides, wall jumps, mantles and out-of-combat sprint, and fight with guns, abilities, light and heavy melee and a parry that stuns an attacking meleer. Most heroes have 3 stamina, a ground dash covers 10 meters and a dash jump 19, and headshots deal 1.65 times damage (Valve's notes and the game files, as of Oct 26, 2026).
