Builds and Itemization
A Deadlock build is the order of items a hero buys with souls: gun builds stack Weapon items, spirit builds stack Spirit items, and every hero adds Vitality. Investment bonuses jump once 4,800 souls are spent in a category, and builds change to counter the enemy team.
A Deadlock build is the list and order of items a hero buys with souls, and it decides how the hero deals damage: a gun build stacks Weapon items, a spirit build stacks Spirit items for ability damage, and nearly every build adds Vitality to stay alive. Each hero can buy any of the 156 items in the shop, holds 9 of them plus up to 3 in Flex Slots, and gets a bonus for the total souls spent in each category, so the choices are real trade-offs (see Items and Shop). This page sets out the theory that guide outlets and Valve's own notes give, as of Oct 26, 2026; each hero's page lists the builds outlets recommend for that hero. Deadlock is an invite-only playtest and Valve rebalances items often, so a build from an old patch may no longer work.

Gun builds and spirit builds
A gun build makes a hero's weapon the main source of damage, with Weapon Items that raise weapon damage, fire rate, ammo and on-hit effects; a spirit build makes abilities the main source, with Spirit Items that raise Spirit Power, cut cooldowns and add range and duration. Dexerto's beginner guide describes the three trees this way, and Game Rant adds that gun builds suit heroes with a reliable weapon while every hero needs Vitality items.
Haze is the clearest gun build. Mobalytics' Carry Haze build (updated Oct 22, 2026) is "fully standard", "opting for all the fire rate items like Burst Fire and Swift Striker", and deadlock-api measured Swift Striker in 93% of Haze games from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026, Rapid Rounds in 88% and Burst Fire in 81%. Yet the same build opens on Extra Spirit, for her magazine and Sleep Dagger: pure builds are rare.
Spirit builds dominate what players buy. From Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026, deadlock-api measured Extra Spirit in 52.6% of hero-matches, Improved Spirit in 50.7% and Superior Cooldown in 39.7%, far above any Weapon item. Mobalytics' Deadman Danny build (Oct 21, 2026) is typical: Extra Spirit, Mystic Burst and Mystic Expansion early, then Tankbuster, Superior Cooldown and Boundless Spirit, then Transcendent Cooldown and Spirit Burn. Esports.gg called the July 2026 meta "Spirit- and Echo Shard-building heroes".
Hybrid and bruiser builds mix all three. Mobalytics' Abrams build (Oct 21, 2026) starts with Restorative Shot, Melee Lifesteal, Close Quarters and Melee Charge, adds Warp Stone, Hunter's Aura, Superior Duration and Lifestrike in the middle game, and ends on Plated Armor, Colossus and Spellbreaker: Weapon, Spirit and Vitality items for a hero who fights up close.
Investment bonuses and power spikes
Every soul spent in a category counts toward that category's investment bonus: weapon damage for Weapon, a percentage of base health for Vitality and Spirit Power for Spirit. Valve's Shop Rework notes (May 8, 2025) made the bonus depend on total souls spent, and warned that "maxing out one tree fully isn't optimal bonus-wise", because the steps are not linear.
The biggest step comes at 4,800 souls spent. By Valve's May 22, 2026 table, Weapon investment jumps from +18% weapon damage at 3,200 souls to +46% at 4,800, Vitality from +20% to +38% base health, and Spirit from +19 to +38 Spirit Power; the later steps (6,400, 8,000, 11,200, 16,000 souls and up) add less each. Reaching 4,800 in your main category, often with a Tier 3 item plus its component, is a power spike. Since City Never Sleeps (Sep 29, 2026) the HUD shows your relative investments so you can see the spike coming, and since Jun 30, 2026 hovering an item previews its effect on the bars.
Item order by phase
The lane phase is for cheap items that win trades and keep you farming. Every hero starts with 600 souls, enough for one 800-soul item soon after the first wave. The earliest common buys measured from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026 were Restorative Shot (3.4 minutes on average), Monster Rounds (4.4), High-Velocity Rounds (4.6) and Extra Regen (5.0), by deadlock-api's item stats. In a hard lane, PC Gamer suggests Healing Rite or Extra Regen first, sold later.
The middle game is for the Tier 2 and Tier 3 items that make the build. In the same measurement, Improved Spirit was bought on average at 13.4 minutes and Superior Cooldown at 24.9. Components matter here: owning one discounts its upgrade (Extended Magazine into Titanic Magazine, Compress Cooldown into Superior Cooldown), so a build is often a set of chains rather than separate items.
The late game is for Tier 4 items at 6,400 souls. Boundless Spirit was bought on average at 29.2 minutes and Transcendent Cooldown at 32.9, measured by deadlock-api, and the average match lasted 36 minutes 26 seconds with 40,696 souls of net worth per player, by its game stats of Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026.
When to buy Vitality
Buy Vitality when you are dying, before you are behind. PC Gamer advises sustain first in a bad lane, and Extra Regen is the most bought Vitality item, in 36.1% of hero-matches from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026. Movement counts as survival too: Mobalytics' expert tier list (Oct 22, 2026) calls Sprint Boots and Fortitude near-mandatory for map presence on the City Never Sleeps map.
Buy resists for the damage that is killing you. Spirit Resilience and Spellbreaker answer abilities, and Bullet Resilience, Metal Skin and Plated Armor answer guns, by their effects in the game files. The full list is on Vitality Items.
Actives
Active items are buttons you must press, and outlets warn new players not to skip them. PC Gamer's guide to actives (Oct 10, 2024) named Warp Stone, Echo Shard, Debuff Remover (now Dispel Magic), Rescue Beam, Unstoppable, Knockdown, Ethereal Shift and Silence Glyph (now Silence Wave) as the ones to learn. The game files list 44 actives among the 156 items. Each has a cooldown, and since the Shop Rework an upgrade shares its component's cooldown.
Flex Slots and selling late
A full inventory forces a choice: sell something, or wait for a Flex Slot. A hero has 9 base slots, and the team gains one Flex Slot for each enemy Walker it destroys, up to 3, by Valve's Nov 21, 2025 rule. PC Gamer called Flex Slots "massive power increases" when your team has them and the enemy does not, which makes Walkers a build goal as well as a map goal (Objectives).
Selling returns half an item's price, as Valve's Shop Rework notes mention, so cheap lane items are the ones to sell late. Upgrading is better than selling when you can: the component's price counts toward the upgrade. Builds can give each item a sell priority from 0 to 100, and Quickbuy (G) then sells the marked item when it runs out of slots, a tool of the May 8, 2025 rework.
Adapting to the enemy
A build is a plan, not a script: outlets tell players to change it for the heroes they face. PC Gamer advises experimenting with situational items: "think about what they'd struggle with and adjust your build." Its examples are anti-heal against self-healers like Abrams, Ethereal Shift against Haze's ultimate and Knockdown against Seven's. Most outlet builds end with a "situational" list for this reason; Mobalytics' Abrams build lists Suppressor against fire-rate heroes and Dispel Magic. Each threat and its items are on Counter Items.
Builds inside the game
The game carries builds of its own. Dexerto recommends that beginners follow the default or community builds in the shop, split into early, middle and late game, and Mobalytics publishes its builds with a Build ID that finds them in the game. City Never Sleeps added a Popular Items view built from live player data, with how often and when each item is bought, plus stat filters, Shop Stats and an updated Build Browser with copy and paste, as Valve's update page lists. Quickbuy, on G, buys the next item of your build each time you reach a shop.
Hero builds
Each hero page lists the builds that outlets recommend and the items players measurably buy on that hero, by phase: Abrams, Apollo, Baba, Bebop, Billy, Calico, Celeste, Deadman Danny, The Doorman, Drifter, Dynamo, Graves, Grey Talon, Haze, Holliday, Infernus, Ivy, Kelvin, Lady Geist, Lash, McGinnis, Mina, Mirage, Mo & Krill, Nurse Harrow, Paige, Paradox, Pocket, Rat King, Rem, Seven, Shiv, Silver, Sinclair, Solomon, Venator, Victor, Vindicta, Violet, Viscous, Vyper, Warden, Wraith and Yamato. The full roster is on Heroes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best build in Deadlock? Deadlock has no single best build: it depends on the hero and the enemy team. Spirit items are the most bought, with Extra Spirit in 52.6% of hero-matches from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026, as deadlock-api measured.
Should I build gun or spirit in Deadlock? In Deadlock, build gun on heroes whose weapon is their main damage, such as Haze, and spirit on heroes whose abilities are, as Game Rant and Mobalytics' hero builds advise. Most builds mix both and add Vitality.
What should I buy first in Deadlock? Deadlock players start with 600 souls and most first buy an 800-soul item: Restorative Shot, Monster Rounds, High-Velocity Rounds or Extra Regen were the earliest common buys from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026, in deadlock-api's measurement. In a hard lane, PC Gamer suggests sustain first.
How do investment bonuses work in Deadlock? In Deadlock, souls spent in each item category give that category's bonus: weapon damage, base health or Spirit Power, by Valve's May 22, 2026 table. The biggest step comes at 4,800 souls spent, for example Weapon from +18% to +46% weapon damage.
When should I sell items in Deadlock? In Deadlock, sell cheap lane items late, when your 9 slots and any Flex Slots are full and a bigger item needs room; selling returns half the price, as Valve's Shop Rework notes mention. A build's sell priority lets Quickbuy do it for you.
How do I make a build in Deadlock? Deadlock's shop has a Build Browser where you can make, copy and paste builds, and City Never Sleeps added a Popular Items view from live player data, as Valve's update page lists. Quickbuy, on G, buys the next item of your build at each shop.
When should I buy Vitality items in Deadlock? In Deadlock, buy Vitality when you are dying in lane (Extra Regen, Healing Rite) and buy resists against the damage type killing you later, as PC Gamer advises. Extra Regen was the most bought Vitality item from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026, in 36.1% of hero-matches.
