Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Lady Geist

Lady Geist is a Deadlock spirit hero who spends her own health on Essence Bomb and Malice, drains it back with Life Drain, and swaps health percentages with an enemy using her ultimate, Soul Exchange. She has played in the playtest since 2024.

Lady Geist is a Deadlock hero who sacrifices her own health to fuel heavy spirit damage, then drains it back from her enemies: Essence Bomb and Malice cost her health, Life Drain heals her, and her ultimate, Soul Exchange, trades health percentages with a nearby enemy. The game's own role line for her is "Sacrifices health then drains it back" in the game files (Oct 26, 2026). She is one of the original playtest heroes, on the roster Esports.gg listed for 2024, before Valve admitted Deadlock existed on Aug 23, 2024.

Abilities

Key Ability What it does Cooldown
1 Essence Bomb Costs health equal to 30% of its damage; a bomb arms for 0.65s, then deals 90 spirit damage in 7m 14s
2 Life Drain A tether that deals 24 DPS for 2.5s and heals her 100% of it 34s
3 Malice Costs 9% health; fires 3 blood shards of 23 damage that slow and stack damage amplification 6s
4 Soul Exchange Swaps health percentages with an enemy within 5.5m 220s

Essence Bomb is her main burst and wave clear. It scales hard with spirit (1.22 per point of Spirit Power) but charges her health equal to 30% of the damage, a rule Valve set in its Mar 6, 2026 Gameplay Update. T1 cuts 5s from the cooldown, T2 adds 50 damage and 2m of radius, and T3 leaves a toxic pool that deals 30% of the damage per second for 6s, raised from 26% on Sep 16, 2026.

Life Drain is her sustain. The tether casts at 18m and breaks at 28m, and Lady Geist moves 32% slower while she drains, per the game files. T1 adds 13 DPS, T2 adds 2.5s, and T3 makes it a charged ability with 3 charges and 0.45 more spirit scaling, so she can drain several targets at once.

Malice is her cheap poke. Each shard stack slows the target 12% (fading over 4s) and makes it take 7% more damage from her for 9s, up to 5 stacks, which is why guides max it first. T1 cuts 3s from the cooldown, T2 adds 25.2 damage and 4 more shards, and T3 adds 8% amplification per stack, per the game files.

Soul Exchange turns a losing fight. It cannot bring an enemy below 30% health, and Lady Geist always ends with at least 30%. T1 cuts 50s from the cooldown, T2 silences enemies within 25m for 3s, and T3 grants 60 Spirit Power, 40% fire rate and 50% spirit resist for 8s on cast, per the game files.

How to play

Lady Geist plays as a spirit caster who wins trades by doing more damage than her health costs. Mobalytics' Lady Geist guide calls her one of the best duelists and a strong split pusher, with big reversal plays and low-cooldown poke, but notes her slow rate of fire, an ultimate that is hard to use in team fights, and abilities that cost health.

In lane, Malice is the tool: it costs little, comes back fast, and sets up Essence Bomb on a slowed target. Dexerto's Lady Geist build (Feb 24, 2026) unlocks Life Drain, Essence Bomb, Malice and then Soul Exchange, and spends points on Malice first (1, 2 and 5 AP), then Life Drain to 2 AP, Essence Bomb to 5 AP, and Soul Exchange last. See Ability Points and Leveling for how points come in.

In fights, she wants enemies low enough to finish and herself low enough that Soul Exchange is a big swing. The ultimate's 5.5m range means she must walk into the fight to use it, so most players save it for a duel or a target already hit by Essence Bomb.

Builds

The most bought items on Lady Geist are spirit and sustain items, as deadlock-api measured in her matches from Oct 15 to 25, 2026:

Phase Most bought (share of her matches)
First 10 minutes Mystic Regeneration 85%, Mystic Burst 78%, Extra Spirit 63%, Mystic Expansion 59%
10 to 25 minutes Radiant Regeneration 59%, Tankbuster 57%, Compress Cooldown 48%, Enduring Speed 44%
After 25 minutes Escalating Exposure 35%, Boundless Spirit 30%, Transcendent Cooldown 29%, Spirit Burn 28%

Source: deadlock-api, item stats for Lady Geist, Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026.

Spirit Burn bought late carried a 59% win rate in that sample. Dexerto's build (written before the Mar 6, 2026 patch) is close to it: Sprint Boots, Mystic Burst, Extra Spirit, Mystic Expansion and Radiant Regeneration early; Enduring Speed, Tankbuster, Superior Cooldown, Spirit Burn and Spirit Resilience mid; Greater Expansion, Mystic Vulnerability, Echo Shard, Transcendent Cooldown and Escalating Exposure late. Almost all of it comes from Spirit Items, with Sprint Boots, Enduring Speed and Spirit Resilience from Vitality Items; Items and Shop explains costs and slots.

Counters and matchups

Lady Geist is countered by staying out of Soul Exchange's short range and by not dueling her once she has gap closers, Mobalytics' guide advises; it also notes that she kills objectives slowly with her gun. Items that answer her kind of hero are on Counter Items.

Measured matchups put her worst against Graves (45.1% win rate when facing), Paige (45.9%) and Victor (46.0%), and best against Sinclair (58.0%), Pocket (57.6%) and The Doorman (57.5%), in deadlock-api's counter stats for Oct 15 to 25, 2026. Graves, Paige and Victor win more against almost everyone in that window, so read those numbers against her own 51.54% average.

All Valve changes are in Patches and Updates.

Lore

Lady Jeanne Geist was once the toast of high society, Valve's in-game lore entry says, and made a pact with the spirit Oathkeeper to regain her youth by draining the living; she bound him with a Ward that is now weakening (game files, Oct 26, 2026). More on the city in Lore and Setting.
