Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Violet

Violet is a Deadlock painter and spirit caster who steers empowered bullets with Living Ink, stuns heroes she sketches with Still Life and silences anyone who leaves her ultimate's ink. Valve added her on Oct 16, 2026, the day Deadlock reached its all-time peak of 303,347 players on Steam.

Violet is a Deadlock hero, a painter who fights with her brush: Living Ink steers her bullets or draws walls, Flow State slides her in and out of fights, Still Life stuns the heroes she sketches, and her ultimate, Abstract Landscape, traps enemies in a circle of ink. Valve released her on Oct 16, 2026 as the fifth of the six City Never Sleeps heroes, in the order players chose by voting. Deadlock set its all-time peak of 303,347 concurrent players that day on SteamDB's chart (read Oct 26, 2026), and she was in 53.78% of measured matches from Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026, the third most played hero.

Living Ink is her main damage and her utility. It has 2 charges (7s apart) on a 22s cooldown. Empower makes her next 3 bullets steerable, each dealing 120% bullet damage plus 35 splash damage (spirit scaling 0.7) in 2.5m, and every hero hit cuts her ability cooldowns by 1.5s (half that for items); Draw instead paints a solid stroke up to 25m long that blocks projectiles and characters for 10s, per the game files on Oct 26, 2026. T1 cuts 4s and adds 15m of drawing distance, T2 gives +10% fire rate for 10s per Empower (stacking 5 times), and T3 adds 1s to the cooldown cut per hit, 30% bullet damage and 0.4 scaling. Its passive refreshes Flow State whenever she casts another ability.

Flow State is her movement and a slow. She drags a brush forward, leaving a trail for 6s that gives allies +100% slide distance and gives enemies a 60% fading slow and 50 to 100 damage (spirit scaling 0.9 to 1.8) that grows over 2s of travel; activating it again flicks the paint in a 15m cone. The cooldown is 23s, in the game files. T1 gives +150% stamina regen while sliding, T2 cuts 6s and adds 8m of flick and 4s of trail, and T3 lets slides build up to +20% damage for 6s.

Still Life is her pick and her scaling. She chooses a hero within 25m and sketches them for 2.6s while keeping them in view, dealing 30 damage per second (spirit scaling 0.7); a finished sketch deals 60 more (spirit scaling 1.4), stuns for 1s and drops a sketch she can pick up for permanent stats: 2.5% damage and 2.5% damage reduction per drawing and +1 Spirit per sketch. The cooldown is 35s, per the game files. T1 adds 15 health regen for 4s, T2 makes the subject deal 35% less damage while drawn, and T3 adds 20% move speed, cuts 11s and adds 0.35s of stun.

Abstract Landscape is her team fight ultimate. After 0.6s it covers an 18m circle in ink for 6s that blocks vision and gives allies +25 Spirit Power; enemies inside are revealed, and any who leave take 100 damage (spirit scaling 1.4), a 2s silence and a 30% slow, which breaks the ink. The cooldown is 165s in the game files on Oct 26, 2026. T1 cuts 20s, T2 adds 25% spirit lifesteal and 15 Spirit Power, and T3 adds 1.25s of silence and 4s, and the ink no longer breaks.

How to play

Violet plays as a caster who keeps her cooldowns turning. Dexerto's guide (Oct 21, 2026) treats Living Ink as her main damage tool, because each hero hit with an empowered bullet "cuts 1.5 seconds off all your ability cooldowns", and uses Draw to wall off a gank or block projectiles. Its ability order puts Living Ink first, then Still Life, Flow State and the ultimate, and maxes Still Life first.

Still Life is how she grows over a match. Dexerto advises collecting every sketch it drops and casting it on enemies who "cannot easily break line of sight", since the sketch needs her to keep looking at the target for 2.6s. Each sketch adds permanent damage and damage reduction, so she gets stronger with every fight she wins.

Flow State weaves between her other spells. Because casting Living Ink or Still Life refreshes it, Dexerto drags the brush through enemies for the slow, flicks it early for a wider area and slides along its trail to reposition. In the lane this gives her both chase and escape.

Her ultimate decides team fights. Dexerto drops Abstract Landscape on clumped enemies, lets the team fight inside the ink with its bonus Spirit Power, and punishes anyone who walks out with the silence and slow.

Builds

Violet builds spirit, regen and charges. Dexerto's build (Oct 21, 2026):

  • Early: Extra Regen, Mystic Regeneration, Extra Charge, Healing Booster, Radiant Regeneration
  • Mid: Spirit Shielding, Spirit Lifesteal, Reactive Barrier, Superior Duration, Tankbuster
  • Late: Boundless Spirit, Escalating Exposure, Spirit Burn, Diviner's Kevlar, Witchmail

Dexerto also suggests Extra Charge and Rapid Recharge for more empowered volleys. In the measured matches from her release to Oct 25, 2026 (deadlock-api's item stats for Violet), players bought Mystic Regeneration (79%), Extra Spirit (79%), Extra Charge (78%) and Extra Regen (61%) in lane; then Rapid Recharge (72%), Radiant Regeneration (60%) and Improved Spirit (48%); late Boundless Spirit (48%), Superior Cooldown (32%), Escalating Exposure (26%, won 59%) and Spirit Burn (25%, won 59%). The items sit in Spirit Items and Vitality Items; Items and Shop explains prices and slots.

Counters and matchups

Breaking line of sight is the plainest counter to Still Life. The sketch needs Violet to keep looking at her target for 2.6s (game files), which is why Dexerto saves it for enemies who cannot easily get behind cover. Leaving Abstract Landscape costs a silence, so effects that remove debuffs, such as Dispel Magic, are worth weighing against her; see Counter Items. Outlets had not published a counter list for her by Oct 26, 2026, ten days after her release.

The measured matchups favor the meta's strongest heroes against her. From Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026, deadlock-api measured her worst raw results against Rat King (44.0%), Graves (44.3%) and Paige (45.3%), and her best against The Doorman (56.5%), Mirage (56.5%) and Mina (56.0%). She won 48.13% in matches of Phantom and higher, where she appeared in 65.62% of games (deadlock-api).

Patch history

Valve has not changed Violet since her release on Oct 16, 2026: no Valve patch note posted on Steam between her release and Oct 26, 2026 names her. The last Valve patch before her arrival was the Oct 14, 2026 update. Patches and Updates lists every patch.

Lore

Violet came to the Cursed Apple at 12, won a full ride to art school and a place in MoMA's student showcase "The Upstart Gallery", and still dreads dying a failure, as her hero text in the game files tells it. Valve's reveal says she "approaches the ritual with the same precision she does her art". Lore and Setting covers the ritual and the city.
