Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. City Never Sleeps Update

City Never Sleeps is Deadlock's Sep 29, 2026 update: a new look for the whole map, neutral camps turned into Haunts, four Districts, a new HUD and accessibility options, and six heroes released by player vote from Oct 2 to Oct 20, 2026.

City Never Sleeps is the Deadlock update Valve released on Sep 29, 2026: in Valve's words "a massive visual update to the map and neutrals, six new heroes, HUD updates, numerous quality-of-life additions, accessibility options, and more". It renamed the three lanes after New York streets, turned neutral camps into themed "Haunts", added four Districts between the lanes and brought a limited-time merchant, the Broker. Its six heroes (Rat King, Baba, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Violet and Nurse Harrow) came out two a week from Oct 2 to Oct 20, 2026 in the order players voted for, and Deadlock set its all-time Steam record of 303,347 players on Oct 16, the day Violet arrived. PC Gamer called it "Valve's second major overhaul" of the game.

A new look for the map

City Never Sleeps gave every part of Deadlock's map a new look and a name. Valve's update page calls it "an updated visitor's guide to New York City" and names the three lanes after New York streets, each with three landmarks:

Lane Color Landmarks
York Yellow Stock Exchange, Seaport Dock, Old Fairfax Factories
Broadway Blue (middle) Uptown, Times Square, Downtown
Greenwich Green Umbria University, Central Park, The Brownstones

Source: Valve's City Never Sleeps page, Sep 29, 2026.

PC Gamer described the result as three themes: a bright city center, a haunted university and a shadowy stock exchange, in its Sep 29, 2026 report. Valve's page fills the landmarks with lore: Umbria University offers "the nation's finest Bibliomancy program", and Central Park's Hangman's Elm is 300 years old (Lore and Setting).

The update also added four Districts between the lanes: the Theater, Chinatown, the Haunted Lot and the Plaza, each with its own Haunts, as Valve's page lists. Minimap labels now name every Lane and District, so callouts have a shared vocabulary (Map and Lanes).

New map features came with the Districts. The Sunken Plaza is a high-risk area under the main square where sound and your stamina fade as you go down; the Chinatown Bell Tower is a soul hotspot whose bell rings across the map when someone collects there; Tough Crates open only to a Heavy Melee; Buff Containers can now also grant Spirit Resist, Bullet Resist, Ability Range or Move Speed; hidden Healing Snacks heal in a pinch; and Steam Vents give invisibility and a little regen to anyone standing on them, all on Valve's page. Mobalytics' interactive map counted 36 Healing Snacks and 74 Tough Crates (Oct 14, 2026).

Neutrals become Haunts

City Never Sleeps replaced Deadlock's old neutral camps with nine kinds of Haunts. Valve's page names them Specimen, Gutter Ghouls, Barrel Mimics, Past Dues, Stage Hands, Crabbage Pots, Festival Spirit, Shrooms and Underhands; the Specimen, a crawling disembodied hand, belongs to Broadway, and the District Haunts are Stage Hands in the Theater, Crabbage Pots and Festival Spirit in Chinatown, Shrooms in the Haunted Lot and Underhands in the Plaza. The game files list each Haunt in grades I, II and III (deadlock-api's copy of the game files, as of Oct 26, 2026). Dot Esports summed it up as nine new camp types.

Haunts changed what the HUD shows about the jungle. Health bars now show a Haunt's soul value and difficulty, and an in-world timer shows when a Haunt camp or the Mid-Boss will respawn when you are near, per Valve's page. Farming routes and camp timers are on Neutral Camps and Jungle.

The Broker and Corrupted Items

The Broker was a merchant who visited for the update's first days only, turning high-tier items into Corrupted versions. Valve's page said his first stock arrived about 30 minutes into a match, with more Corrupted Items about every 15 minutes after, and warned that "the Broker's wares always come with a cost": each match gave every Corrupted Item random drawbacks from a fixed set, the same for every player in that match.

He left when the first new hero arrived, as Valve had said he would, which made his stay Sep 29 to Oct 2, 2026. Mobalytics (Oct 13, 2026) placed him near the middle lane's Guardians for both teams, converting one Tier 3 or Tier 4 item at a time for a price equal to its original cost, in Standard and Ranked. Corrupted Items live on in Street Brawl, which grants one after the round 5 item draft. Valve has not said whether the Broker will return.

Shop, HUD and pings

The shop learned from live data. Popular Items narrows the list to a hero's most bought items, tooltips show how often and when an item is bought, filters combine stats and modifiers, Shop Stats preview a purchase's effect, and keys 1 to 6 switch tabs, according to Valve's page; the full shop is on Items and Shop.

New health bars carry more information. They show party members' names, a Rejuvenator indicator, an ultimate indicator, current health as a number, stamina and critical health, and an Event Feed breaks down each killing blow by item or ability with the bounty and your share (Valve's page). A Sep 30, 2026 follow-up made names fade between 25 m and 35 m and let players hide them.

Pings and voice lines were rebuilt. Valve's page lists "over 15,000 new and updated pings", pre-match hero conversations raised from over 700 to 1,500, more than 10,000 other new voice lines, and a Dialogue Player that plays any hero or Patron line.

Accessibility, settings and the Sandbox

City Never Sleeps added Deadlock's first dedicated accessibility settings. Valve's page lists an Enemy UI color, voice-over subtitles with size, color and font options, Auto Move, Auto Fire, Auto Mantle, Reduced Camera Shake, an inset HUD for 21x9 screens, and Japanese, Chinese and Korean text input; settings now save to the cloud and can be shared as codes (Settings and Performance, Controls and Keybinds).

The Sandbox gained practice tools. Bot Recording records and loops bot actions, and a Combat Log, a Speed Graph, a DPS Meter, falloff guides, free shopping and a force-spawn menu sit beside it; in the Sandbox and Explore NYC, crates and neutrals now first spawn at 5 seconds instead of 30 (Valve's page; Game Modes).

The update also tightened conduct and the engine. A reported player found abusing voice or text chat is muted for the rest of the match and given a 30-day comms ban; custom lobbies hold 8 spectators; and Valve "updated engine code to the latest version of Source 2" and "improved anti-cheat", with drop shadows that fall straight down to improve performance (Valve's page).

The six heroes

Six heroes came out two a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2pm Pacific, from Oct 2 to Oct 20, 2026. Voting moved from the Hideout to a new Pregame lobby, where the winning team's votes count double and the first win of the day gives double votes, per Valve's page; the full rules and results are on Hero Voting.

Valve counted over 110 million votes across the event, with Baba beating Solomon by nearly 0.5%, the closest contest, according to its Oct 20, 2026 post. The roster stood at 44 heroes after Nurse Harrow (Heroes).

Valve's note on development

Valve used the update's post to say where Deadlock stands. "We think building a multiplayer game is very hard and risky, and the best way to minimize that risk to make sure that we are able to have it in players' hands from an early state," the Sep 29, 2026 post reads, thanking players for their feedback "despite the game being unfinished".

The post lists what comes next. Progression and hero and Hideout customization are in the works "before the game is fully released"; "large item redesigns/additions and alternate game modes" are more speculative; the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers are the focus of upcoming updates; and hero remodels will arrive gradually. PC Gamer read it as no sign of an imminent public release (Sep 30, 2026); Valve has not announced a release date (Release Date and Playtest).

Patches since

Three follow-ups adjusted the update. The Sep 30, 2026 forum notes added the health bar name options and a minimap ping when the Chinatown bell rings; the Oct 5, 2026 patch fixed troopers walking too slowly and nerfed Rat King's ultimate (cooldown from 130s to 160s) and Sinclair; and the Oct 14, 2026 patch nerfed Baba and buffed Deadman Danny (base health from 680 to 730). The full list is on Patches and Updates.

Reception and players

Outlets praised the update. PC Gamer called Deadlock "one of the moodiest MOBAs out there" after it and noted heroes "have double the amount of voice lines as before" (Sep 29, 2026); GamingOnLinux wrote that it "makes the game feel quite a lot more complete" (Oct 1, 2026).

The update took Deadlock to new player records, each on a hero's release day. Before it the game "was regularly hitting 80,000 players", GamingOnLinux noted; it reached 228,086 on Sep 29 to 30, beating the 2024 record of 171,490 (Dot Esports), then 262,145 on Oct 9, Solomon's day, past Team Fortress 2's all-time peak (PC Gamer), and 303,347 on Oct 16, Violet's day, its all-time peak on SteamDB's chart (read Oct 26, 2026). The whole history is on Steam Player Count.
