Release Date and Playtest
Deadlock has no release date: as of Oct 26, 2026 its Steam page says "Planned Release Date: To be announced", and the game is an invite-only playtest in early development with temporary art and experimental gameplay. Valve's Sep 29, 2026 post lists progression and hero and Hideout customization as work still to do before full release.
Deadlock has no release date: on Oct 26, 2026 its Steam page says "Planned Release Date: To be announced" and "This game is not yet available on Steam", and describes the game as "in early development with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay. Access is currently limited to friend invite via our playtesters." So Deadlock is not out, not in open beta and not on sale in Early Access: it is a free, invite-only playtest that has run since 2024 and that anyone can enter with a friend's invite (How to Get an Invite). Valve has never given a year, a season or a price. Its fullest statement on what remains came with the City Never Sleeps update on Sep 29, 2026, and PC Gamer read it as no sign that a public release is near.

Is Deadlock out?
Deadlock is not out. Steam's own data for the app marks it coming_soon with the release date "To be announced", and its short description reads "Deadlock is a multiplayer game in early development" (Steam appdetails, read Oct 26, 2026). The store page offers a wishlist button and no purchase, and Deadlock does not appear in Steam search (Destructoid, Oct 17, 2026).
The playtest is nonetheless huge. On Oct 16, 2026 it reached 303,347 concurrent players as SteamDB measured, and on Oct 26, 2026 Steam ranked it 9th by players, with a 24-hour peak of 267,268. That is why the question comes up so often: many players reasonably assume a game this busy must have released. The Steam Player Count page has the full history.
Because the app is unreleased, it cannot take Steam reviews: the store shows "No user reviews" (Steam, read Oct 26, 2026). There is also no Metacritic score, and nothing to pre-order: PC Gamer noted that Valve has spent "multiple years without making a single cent" from Deadlock directly (PC Gamer, Oct 10, 2026).
What Valve has said about a release
Valve's clearest statement is its development note of Sep 29, 2026. It thanks players for their feedback "despite the game being unfinished", and explains the open playtest: "We think building a multiplayer game is very hard and risky, and the best way to minimize that risk to make sure that we are able to have it in players' hands from an early state" (Valve, Sep 29, 2026).
The same note says what is still to come. Valve is building "progression and hero/hideout customizations", features it wants "to be able to adjust and significantly change based on feedback before the game is fully released". More speculative work, which Valve is not "100% sure" will ship, includes "large item redesigns/additions and alternate game modes that expand the scope of the game". The Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers are next in line for rework, and hero remodels, once planned "towards the end of early development", will now arrive gradually "in the near future" (Valve, Sep 29, 2026).
Valve's line on access has not changed since the reveal. On Aug 23, 2024 the Valve developer Yoshi wrote: "We are remaining invite-only and continue to be in an early development stage with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay" (Valve forums, Aug 23, 2024). Valve's update pages in 2026 still carry the same sentence about friend invites (Valve, Sep 29, 2026).
Valve also does not announce updates far ahead. Before City Never Sleeps, Yoshi told players the update was delayed to "late September" and promised "a heads up (or order a ton of pizza) when things are a few days away or so" (PC Gamer, Aug 29, 2026). Expect a release, when it comes, to be announced the same way: shortly before, in a Steam post.
What outlets expect
No outlet has reported a release date or year from Valve. Their views are estimates and readings of Valve's posts:
- PC Gamer, after the Sep 29, 2026 note: "I don't think Valve's letting it out of the cage anytime soon" (PC Gamer, Sep 30, 2026).
- PC Gamer, earlier, called the Jul 30, 2026 ranked update "another big step toward the presumed, eventual launch of an open beta" (PC Gamer, Jul 30, 2026).
- Beebom: "Deadlock could remain in development for another year, making a late 2027 or early 2028 release a reasonable estimate" (Beebom, Oct 1, 2026).
- GamingOnLinux headlined City Never Sleeps as "still a while away from a public release" (GamingOnLinux, Oct 1, 2026).
The open beta that did not happen
An open beta has been rumored since 2024 and has never happened. Insider Gaming relayed an unverified Reddit claim that Deadlock's open beta could come "in July" (Insider Gaming, 2024); no open beta came that July or since, and Valve never mentioned one. As of Oct 26, 2026 the only way in is still a friend's invite.
Vi.ki's launch clock is a best guess
The launch clock on this viki counts down to Dec 31, 2027, and that date is our own estimate, not Valve's. We chose the end of the only published window, Beebom's "late 2027 or early 2028", because Valve's Sep 29, 2026 note still lists progression, customization, a Mid-Boss, Guardian and Walker rework and hero remodels as work before full release, and because Valve's big updates have come about eight months apart (Old Gods, New Blood on Jan 22, 2026, City Never Sleeps on Sep 29, 2026). We will replace the guess the day Valve announces a date.

What "early development" means for players
"Early development" is visible in the game. Many heroes still wear temporary art: when Holliday, Vyper, Calico and The Magnificent Sinclair arrived, Valve warned that "some of these characters have a much higher degree of temporary art than usual" (Valve, Jan 17, 2025), and its Sep 29, 2026 note still lists "updating older hero artwork" and hero remodels as later work.
The gameplay changes often and sometimes sharply. Valve redesigned the map from four lanes to three, rebuilt the shop, replaced the Patrons, reworked the Soul Urn several times and split it into two mechanics, which PCGamesN called "a months-long saga" (PCGamesN, Aug 9, 2026). Numbers on this viki carry the patch or date they come from for that reason.
Some systems a released game would have are missing. As of Apr 2026 there was no way to spend money in Deadlock and no official cosmetics or store (Mein-MMO), and Valve's progression and customization systems are still in development. Ranked arrived only with the Matchmaking Update of Jul 30, 2026, which Valve warned would be "very rocky" at first.
Frequently asked questions
Is Deadlock out yet? No. Deadlock is an invite-only playtest, and its Steam page says "Planned Release Date: To be announced" (read Oct 26, 2026).
When does Deadlock come out? Valve has not announced a release date for Deadlock. Beebom estimated "late 2027 or early 2028" (Beebom, Oct 1, 2026), and Vi.ki's clock uses Dec 31, 2027 as a best guess only.
Is there a Deadlock open beta? No. Valve has never announced an open beta for Deadlock, and a rumored 2025 open beta did not happen; access is still by friend invite as of Oct 26, 2026.
Is Deadlock still in beta? Deadlock is still in its invite-only playtest, which Valve calls "early development" on the Steam page, not a beta or Early Access sale.
Is Deadlock in Early Access? Not as a paid Early Access game: Deadlock cannot be bought, and Valve has not announced a price or business model (Steam appdetails, read Oct 26, 2026). Players' own store tags include "Early Access", but the game is a free playtest.
What does Valve still have to do before Deadlock releases? Valve's Sep 29, 2026 post names progression, hero and Hideout customization, a rework of the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, and hero remodels as Deadlock work still to come.

It has 44 heroes as of Oct 26, 2026, and reached an all-time peak of 303,347 Steam players on Oct 16, 2026, even though you can only join through a friend's invite. -
Lore and SettingDeadlock is set in the Cursed Apple, Valve's occult, alternate-history New York, where every match is a ritual in which two Patrons, the Hidden King and the Archmother, compete to be summoned. Valve tells its story in short hero texts and update pages rather than a campaign, and has given no year for the setting.
