Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Warden

Warden is a Deadlock brawler who weakens enemies with an Alchemical Flask, traps them with Binding Word and drains a whole fight with his Last Stand ultimate. He has been in the game since before Valve revealed it in Aug 2024.

Warden is a Deadlock brawler who leads from the front: he throws an Alchemical Flask that cuts enemies' weapon damage, curses them with Binding Word so they must run or be immobilized, and channels Last Stand to drain everyone around him. He is one of the original heroes, in the game before Valve's Aug 23, 2024 reveal (PCGamesN counted 22 heroes before Jan 17, 2025), and one of the 44 Heroes in the invite-only playtest on Oct 26, 2026. He is also one of the least picked: deadlock-api measured him in only 10.33% of normal-mode matches from Oct 15 to 25, 2026.

Abilities

Key Ability What it does Cooldown
1 Alchemical Flask An area flask: damage, -25% weapon damage and a slow 12s
2 Willpower A barrier and a burst of move speed 40s
3 Binding Word Curses a hero: escape 20m in 2.8s or be immobilized 34s
4 Last Stand Ultimate: a channeled pulse that damages and heals him 180s

Source: the game files, as of Oct 26, 2026.

Alchemical Flask deals 60 damage (spirit scaling 0.63) in 5.5m, cuts enemies' weapon damage by 25% for 7s and slows them 16% for 3s, per the game files. T1 drains 1 stamina from each hero hit; T2 adds 35 damage and another 25% weapon damage reduction; T3 cuts 7s, adds 2m and lowers their fire rate by 30%. Valve's Sep 16, 2026 update cut the flask's projectile range and speed by 30%, so it must be thrown from closer.

Willpower gives a 125 barrier (spirit scaling 0.8) and 15% more move speed for 5s. T1 adds 20% move speed, T2 cuts 24s and adds 2s, and T3 adds 30% debuff resistance and 2.1 more barrier scaling. It is how he closes the distance to his target, and since Valve's May 22, 2026 update the T3 debuff resistance also applies to debuffs he already has.

Binding Word curses a hero within 15m; if they do not get 20m away within 2.8s they take 110 damage (spirit scaling 2.44) and are immobilized for 1.75s, per the game files. T1 makes trapped heroes take 20% more bullet damage for 5s, T2 adds 0.75s, and T3 cuts 14s and silences the target until they escape or are trapped.

Last Stand, after 2s of charging, pulses every 0.5s for 6s, dealing 70 damage per second (spirit scaling 1.3) in 12m and healing Warden for 75% of the damage dealt to heroes (10% from others), with 50% bullet and spirit resist and immunity to fear while he channels. T1 adds 4m, T2 adds 40.5 damage per second and cuts 30s, and T3 adds 4s, makes him unstoppable and adds 30% resist. Valve's Jun 11, 2026 notes gave T2 a 35s cut; the game files on Oct 26, 2026 show 30s.

How to play

Warden is a front-liner. Mobalytics' Warden guide calls him a tanky front line, especially into spirit builds, with lockdown from Alchemical Flask and Binding Word and fast jungling and roaming. His 60 health per boon, the growth in the game files, keeps him sturdy as he levels.

In lane, the flask wins trades. A hit takes a quarter off the enemy's weapon damage for 7s, so throw it, then shoot while they deal less back. Mobalytics names long-range poke as his weakness: against a laner who stays at range, farm and wait for your ultimate.

Binding Word is a chase tool. Cast it, then stay close with Willpower's speed: the target must get 20m away within 2.8s or be immobilized. With T3 they are also silenced while they run, so they cannot use a movement ability to escape.

Last Stand decides team fights. Walk into the middle of the enemy team with Willpower up, start charging, and the pulses heal him for most of the damage they deal. The 2s wind-up is the danger: stuns and knock-ups interrupt it, so use it when enemy crowd control has been spent. On interruption, see Movement and Combat; on when to group, Macro and Rotations.

Builds

Warden's players build his gun first. Deadlock-api's measured item stats for his matches from Oct 15 to 25, 2026 show the most bought items:

Phase Most bought items (share of Warden's matches)
First 10 minutes High-Velocity Rounds 77%, Opening Rounds 72%, Extended Magazine 56%, Titanic Magazine 44%
10 to 25 minutes Fleetfoot 54%, Quicksilver Reload 52%, Mercurial Magnum 52%, Enduring Speed 51%
After 25 minutes Spiritual Overflow 36%, Mercurial Magnum 22%, Siphon Bullets 19%

Source: deadlock-api (measured), item stats for Warden, Oct 15 to 25, 2026.

High-Velocity Rounds, Opening Rounds, Extended Magazine, Titanic Magazine, Fleetfoot and Spiritual Overflow are Weapon Items; Enduring Speed and Siphon Bullets are Vitality Items; Quicksilver Reload and Mercurial Magnum are Spirit Items. Tier prices run 800, 1,600, 3,200 and 6,400 souls, per the game's price table.

Dexerto's Warden build (Mar 9, 2026) is similar early: High-Velocity Rounds, Monster Rounds, Quicksilver Reload, Cultist Sacrifice and Extra Stamina; then Sprint Boots, Enduring Speed, Spirit Resilience, Mercurial Magnum and Extra Spirit; late Vampiric Burst, Spellslinger, Superior Duration, Boundless Spirit and Frenzy. Its ability order puts Alchemical Flask first, then Willpower to 5 AP. More on Items and Shop and Builds and Itemization.

Counters and matchups

Mobility beats Warden. Mobalytics says to keep stamina to escape Binding Word's 20m, to fight him right after he misses his flask, and to stay on him so Last Stand can be interrupted during its 2s wind-up. A stun or other interrupt stops the channel unless he has its T3, which makes him unstoppable while channeling; more on Counter Items.

His measured matchups are hardest against the strongest heroes of the patch. Deadlock-api's counter stats (Oct 15 to 25, 2026) show him winning 39.3% against Graves, 40.6% against Rat King and 41.8% against Paige, three heroes who beat almost everyone that week. His best matchups were Viscous (52.3%), Shiv (52.3%) and Pocket (52.2%).

Tier lists and win rate

Warden is out of favor after four 2026 nerfs to his gun. In all ranks he won 47.00% of normal-mode matches, 30th of 44, and at Phantom 1 and above 45.45% in only 4.13% of matches, the least picked hero there, as deadlock-api measured over Oct 15 to 25, 2026. Dexerto's Oct 9, 2026 tier list put him in B tier and Mobalytics' expert list (RinaVX, Oct 22, 2026) in D; before City Never Sleeps, Dot Esports (Aug 25, 2026) had him in A. See Hero Tier List.

Lore

Warden comes from a lineage of militant alchemists who trained for generations to hold off a mystic apocalypse, according to the game's hero text as deadlock-api republishes it. The same text says he leads from the front and hinders his opponents, but what he calls brave, others call reckless. His gun is named Freedom's Cost. More on Lore and Setting.
