Paradox
Paradox is a Deadlock hero who manipulates space and time: Pulse Grenade, Time Wall and Kinetic Carbine set up her ultimate, Paradoxical Swap, which trades places with an enemy hero. She is one of the original heroes, in the game before Valve announced it on Aug 23, 2024.
Paradox is a Deadlock hero who manipulates space and time to pick off single targets: she slows enemies with Pulse Grenade, blocks their bullets with Time Wall, freezes them with a charged Kinetic Carbine shot and swaps places with them using her ultimate, Paradoxical Swap. Her playstyle text in the game files says she outpaces enemies one on one by swapping them into a waiting Pulse Grenade, her wall or her teammates. She is one of the original heroes, in the invite-only playtest before Valve announced Deadlock on Aug 23, 2024, as PCGamesN's count of the roster shows. Dot Esports (Aug 25, 2026) named her among the hardest heroes to learn.

Source: deadlock-api's copy of the game files, as of Oct 26, 2026. T1, T2 and T3 below are the 1, 2 and 5 Ability Point upgrades.
Pulse Grenade pulses every 0.8s for 3.2s; each pulse deals 35 damage (spirit scaling 0.3) in a 5.5m radius that grows 1m per pulse, applies a 20% time slow and stacks +4% Paradox damage on the target for 8s, per the game files. It deals half damage to objectives. T1 gives -12s cooldown, T2 +20 pulse damage and +0.5 scaling, and T3 +4% per stack and +1.6s.
Time Wall places a wall 8m wide and 4m high, up to 200m away, for 5.5s, per the game files. It freezes enemy bullets and projectiles, doubles the speed of allied bullets that pass through and adds +30% weapon damage to them, and slows enemies who touch it by 64%. T1 adds +3.5s, +3m width and +1m height, T2 silences enemies for 2.3s and adds +35% to the ally damage bonus, and T3 gives +2 charges, 2s apart.
Kinetic Carbine charges a shot for up to 2.5s (held up to 3.5s) that deals spirit damage scaled on weapon damage and stops the target in time for 0.25s to 0.4s, per the game files. Paradox moves 25% faster while charging, and a charged shot adds +20% air dash distance. T1 adds +0.4s maximum time stop, T2 -12s cooldown and +0.06 speed scaling, and T3 +2s hold and +55% maximum damage scaling. Valve's Sep 16, 2026 update cut the uncharged shot from 25% to 10% of weapon damage, leaving the full charge at 125%.
Paradoxical Swap, her ultimate, fires a projectile up to 25m that swaps Paradox with the enemy hero it hits and deals 150 damage (spirit scaling 1.1), per the game files. T1 adds a 200 barrier (spirit scaling 1.5) for 8s, T2 gives -30s cooldown and +13m range, and T3 swaps every enemy within 7m of the target and adds +10% maximum-health damage; an alternate cast swaps only one.
How to play
Paradox plays as a pick hero who isolates one enemy at a time. Mobalytics' Paradox guide calls her useful in every situation, strong at making plays with Paradoxical Swap and good at poking with Pulse Grenade and Kinetic Carbine, but mechanically demanding, without mobility and in need of team coordination.
The swap is the setup for everything else. Her own game text describes the combo: swap an enemy into a Pulse Grenade, into Time Wall or into her teammates, where the target's time slow and stacked damage amplification make it easy to finish. Kinetic Carbine adds a short time stop at range, and its +25% move speed while charging is one of her few ways to reposition.
Time Wall is both defense and offense. It freezes enemy shots, and since Valve's Mar 6, 2026 update allied bullets fired through it fly twice as fast and gain +30% weapon damage, and Valve's note says that bonus applies to Kinetic Carbine too. She can place the wall up to 200m away, far beyond her gun's falloff of 20m to 58m in the game files.
Builds
Paradox's current builds mix gun items with burst spirit items. deadlock-api measured her purchases from Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026:
| Phase | Most bought (share of her matches) |
|---|---|
| Lane | High-Velocity Rounds 61%, Long Range 50%, Restorative Shot 44%, Headshot Booster 43% |
| Mid game | Tankbuster 63%, Express Shot 61%, Compress Cooldown 52%, Sharpshooter 45% |
| Late game | Mystic Reverb 42%, Superior Cooldown 34%, Spirit Burn 33% (55% win rate), Glass Cannon 22% (55% win rate) |

Dexerto's build (Mar 2, 2026) runs Headshot Booster, Extra Stamina, Sprint Boots, Monster Rounds, Healing Rite and Restorative Shot early; Hollow Point, Stamina Mastery, Enduring Speed, Cursed Relic and Knockdown in the mid game; and Crippling Headshot, Warp Stone, Transcendent Cooldown, Spirit Resilience and Metal Skin late. It levels Pulse Grenade, Kinetic Carbine and Time Wall, takes Paradoxical Swap at the sixth point and maxes Pulse Grenade first. Items by category are on Weapon Items, Vitality Items and Spirit Items; the shop is on Items and Shop and Builds and Itemization.
Counters and matchups
Paradox depends on long cooldowns, so a missed swap is the moment to fight her. Mobalytics advises punishing her when she misses, using tanks to block her line of sight so the swap cannot reach its target, and notes that in a long hallway shooting into Time Wall is fine, since the frozen bullets eventually fly through. Mobalytics' Street Brawl guide (Aug 27, 2026) lists Cursed Relic as an answer to Paradox; more such items are on Counter Items.
In deadlock-api's measured matchups from Oct 15 to Oct 25, 2026, Paradox did worst against Graves (37.7%), Rat King (39.0%) and Victor (39.1%), and best against Mina (51.8%), Sinclair (51.5%) and Pocket (51.4%). Graves and Rat King top almost every hero's worst-matchup list in that window, so the figures are best read against Paradox's own 45.73% average.
Patch history
Valve's recent changes to Paradox, newest first (every update is on Patches and Updates):
- Sep 16, 2026: Kinetic Carbine minimum damage multiplier 25% to 10%, and its T3 no longer raises it.
- Jun 30, 2026: Kinetic Carbine T2 also adds move speed scaling (0.06); T3 now raises both minimum and maximum damage scaling. The same update nerfed all ultimate base and upgrade cooldowns by 15%, which is why the game files on Oct 26, 2026 list Paradoxical Swap at 110s with a -30s T2 (95s and -35s in the Mar 6 notes).
- May 22, 2026: Time Wall T1 +2.5s to +3.5s, T3 +1 to +2 charges with the charge delay 4s to 2s; Kinetic Carbine T3 +50% to +55%; Paradoxical Swap damage 125 to 150.
- Apr 30, 2026: Kinetic Carbine cooldown 30s to 28s and +20% air dash distance when charged; Time Wall T2 weapon damage +30% to +35%.
- Mar 6, 2026: a rework. Pulse Grenade's slow became a time slow and its damage amp fell from 6% to 4% per stack; Time Wall stopped damaging enemies and began boosting allied bullets; Paradoxical Swap lost its 80% spirit lifesteal and gained a barrier T1 and a multi-target T3.
- Nov 21, 2025: base health 700 to 650, regen 2.0 to 1.0, Pulse Grenade damage 40 to 35.
Her base health in the game files is 730 on Oct 26, 2026, higher than Valve's last posted figure; Valve has not posted every change on Steam.
Lore
Paradox is both a time artifact and a thieves' guild, according to her in-game biography: the guild steals from people thought untouchable and shows the loot at pop-up museums. More on the setting is on Lore and Setting.
