Deadlock public release: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Valve's Sep 29, 2026 development note and press estimates.
Best guessValve gives no date: its Steam page says "To be announced" and access is limited to friend invites. Its Sep 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps post lists work still to do before full release (progression, hero and Hideout customization, the Mid-Boss, Guardians and Walkers, hero remodels), its big updates have come about eight months apart, and Beebom's Oct 1, 2026 estimate is "late 2027 or early 2028", so we count to the end of 2027. Beginner's Guide

To play Deadlock well from your first match, farm souls from trooper waves and orbs, deny the enemy's orbs, parry heavy melee, follow the shop's builds, spend Ability Points on your main damage ability, and turn every won fight into an objective. Deadlock is Valve's invite-only playtest, and these rules are as of Valve's Oct 14, 2026 patch.

To win your first games of Deadlock, collect souls: they are your gold and your experience at once, so last hits on troopers, soul orbs, jungle camps and kills decide who has the stronger items and abilities. Every outlet's beginner guide starts there, PC Gamer's in plain words: "Souls are everything in this game." Deadlock is Valve's 6v6 hero shooter and MOBA, still in an invite-only playtest with no release date (Steam page, read Oct 26, 2026). This guide follows a match from the hero screen to the enemy Patron, with the rules as Valve's patch notes set them up to the Oct 14, 2026 update, and links to the full pages.

What a match of Deadlock is

A match of Deadlock is won by destroying the enemy Patron, the giant at the heart of the enemy base. To reach it, a team breaks a lane's objectives in order: the Guardian, then the Walker, then a pair of Base Guardians, which make the Shrines vulnerable, then the Patron, which falls a second time as the Weakened Patron, as Valve's May 22, 2026 update and Dexerto's beginner guide describe it. The detail is on Objectives.

Matches are long. deadlock-api measured an average of 2,186 seconds, about 36 minutes, across 1.6 million Standard and Ranked matches from Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026. The same data put the first objective's fall at 7 minutes 43 seconds on average, which is roughly where the lane phase ends.

Your first games can be easier ones. PC Gamer (Elie Gould, Jun 8, 2026) recommends Street Brawl, a 4v4 best-of-five mode with no farming where you learn items three at a time, and TheGamer recommends bot matches to learn farming and the map and the Sandbox to learn a hero's abilities. The other modes are on Game Modes.

Pick a simple hero first

Start with a hero the game itself rates as simple. The game files give every hero a complexity rating, and 15 of the 44 heroes have the lowest, 1, among them Abrams, Seven, McGinnis, Infernus, Haze, Paige and Wraith. Seven is in every beginner list checked, from Esports.gg and TheGamer in 2024 to Dot Esports in Aug 2026. The full comparison, with measured win rates, is on Best Heroes for Beginners, and the current meta on Hero Tier List.

Learn the hero before you take it into a real match. The Hideout, which replaced the menus on Aug 18, 2025, has a practice range for movement and abilities, and the City Never Sleeps update (Sep 29, 2026) gave the Sandbox a DPS meter, a combat log and falloff guides that show where your gun's damage drops.

The lane phase: troopers and soul orbs

Spend roughly the first five to ten minutes in your lane, farming trooper waves without pushing into the enemy Guardian, as Esports.gg's strategy guide advises. Lane troopers are the biggest single source of souls: deadlock-api measured an average of 9,658 souls per player from troopers in a match (Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026), against 8,171 from hero kills and 4,157 from neutral camps.

A dying trooper splits its souls in two. Since Valve's Jun 30, 2026 update, half flies up as an orb that you shoot to secure (and the enemy shoots to deny you), and the other half falls to the ground as an orb your team picks up within 18 meters, per the Nov 21, 2025 update. Shooting the flying orb is the skill to practice; every orb also gives back ammo (Shop Rework, May 8, 2025). The full rules, sharing and timing are on Laning Guide.

Chip the enemy laner with abilities. Abilities in Deadlock cost no mana, only cooldown, so PC Gamer calls health "the early-game resource": an enemy sent back to base to heal misses waves, which is nearly as good as a kill. If you are the one losing the lane, play safe near your Guardian and farm, PC Gamer adds, because every death feeds the enemy souls.

Parry heavy melee

Parry (F by default) stuns an enemy who melees you during it. A successful parry stuns the attacker for about two seconds, per Esports.gg, and Game Rant says to watch for the heavy melee's visible wind-up, because a missed parry goes on a cooldown of about five seconds and parry does nothing against bullets or abilities. Since City Never Sleeps the parry cooldown shows near your reticle. More on melee, dashes and slides is on Movement and Combat.

Buying items

Follow a build until you know the items. Dexerto tells beginners to use the default or community builds in the shop, split into early, mid and late game, and Valve's Quickbuy (G since the Shop Rework) queues your build and buys the next item whenever you return to a shop. City Never Sleeps added a Popular Items view built from live player data, showing how often and when each item is bought.

Items come in three trees and four price tiers. Weapon items raise gun damage, fire rate and ammo, Vitality items add health, regen and resistances, and Spirit items raise ability damage and utility, as Dexerto sums them; the game holds 173 shop items at 800, 1,600, 3,200 and 6,400 souls. Owning a component makes its upgrade cheaper (May 8, 2025). See Items and Shop, Weapon Items, Vitality Items, Spirit Items and Builds and Itemization.

Buy sustain when a lane goes badly. PC Gamer suggests Healing Rite or Extra Regen, which you can sell later, and players agree: the earliest common purchases measured by deadlock-api are Restorative Shot (3.4 minutes on average), Monster Rounds (4.4), High-Velocity Rounds (4.6) and Extra Regen (5.0) (Oct 15 to Oct 26, 2026). Against heroes that beat you, PC Gamer says to "think about what they'd struggle with and adjust your build"; Counter Items lists the answers.

Ability Points

Souls also level you up. Each soul threshold, a boon, unlocks an ability or grants an Ability Point, and the four abilities unlock at 0, 500, 1,400 and 3,200 souls in the game files as of Oct 26, 2026, so your ultimate arrives at 3,200. Each ability has three upgrades, which guides such as Dexerto's list at 1, 2 and 5 Ability Points. Guides give each hero an order: put early points into the ability that deals your damage or wins your lane. Builds can save an ability order too (Map Rework, Feb 25, 2025). See Ability Points and Leveling.

After the lane: farm, then group

Between waves, clear jungle camps. Mobalytics (Aug 28, 2026) advises pushing your wave, then taking camps in the downtime: small camps from about 3:00, medium from about 6:00, a Sinner's Sacrifice at 8:00 and large camps from 10:00. City Never Sleeps renamed the neutrals Haunts and filled the map with crates, Buff Containers that give permanent stat bonuses, and hidden Healing Snacks (Valve, Sep 29, 2026). See Neutral Camps and Jungle.

Turn a won fight into an objective. If the enemies you killed are on long respawn timers, "your next play should almost always be to hit an objective, hard," PC Gamer writes. Respawns grow from 8 seconds at 5 minutes to 35 seconds at 20 minutes (Jun 30, 2026), raised to 38 seconds on Sep 16, 2026, so late deaths cost the most.

Learn the three big shared objectives. The Mid-Boss is up from the start (May 22, 2026) and drops the Rejuvenator crystal; the Soul Urn spawns at 10 minutes and every 5 minutes after and pays its carrier; the Unstable Rift gives a team attacking troopers. When and how to take each is on Macro and Rotations, Mid-Boss and Rejuvenator and Soul Urn.

Watch the minimap. A map with no enemies visible means a gank is coming, especially when you push a lane or the Mid-Boss is up, PC Gamer warns, and it advises spreading out against area stuns such as Dynamo's and staying near teammates against divers such as Haze.

Mistakes outlets list

  • Dying for nothing: each death gives the enemy souls, so "better safe than sorry" while learning (PC Gamer).
  • Pushing into the enemy Guardian early: Guardians start with 50% extra damage resistance that fades to -50% over the first 12 minutes (May 22, 2026), and they turn on anyone who shoots a hero within 15 meters of them (Nov 7, 2024).
  • Skipping active items: PC Gamer's list of actives worth learning includes Warp Stone, Echo Shard, Rescue Beam, Unstoppable and Knockdown.
  • Starting the Mid-Boss too early: it does not heal back if abandoned, so get picks and push lanes first (Mobalytics, Aug 8, 2026).
  • Wandering: when there is nothing to fight, defend a lane or clear camps (PC Gamer).

Controls to set first

The default keys are WASD, Space to jump and mantle, Left Shift to dash, Left Ctrl to crouch and slide, Q for melee, F for parry, 1 to 4 for abilities and Z, X and C for items, per Dexerto's settings guide (updated Jul 15, 2026). City Never Sleeps added a Keybind Map, per-hero settings and accessibility options such as Auto Mantle. See Controls and Keybinds and Settings and Performance.

Ranked comes later

Ranked opens after 60 Standard wins, and you may only pick heroes you have won 15 Standard games with, at least three of them, under Valve's Matchmaking Update of Jul 30, 2026. Season 1 ends on Nov 5, 2026. See Ranked and Matchmaking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Deadlock hard for beginners? Deadlock asks a lot of new players because it mixes shooting with MOBA farming, items and objectives, and matches average about 36 minutes (deadlock-api, Oct 2026). PC Gamer points newcomers to Street Brawl, a shorter 4v4 mode with no farming.

What is the most important thing to learn in Deadlock? In Deadlock, outlets agree it is collecting souls: they buy items and level abilities, so securing trooper orbs and not dying decide most games, as PC Gamer puts it.

How do you deny souls in Deadlock? In Deadlock you deny by shooting the soul orb that flies up when one of your own troopers dies, before the enemy secures it; since Jun 30, 2026 that orb holds half the trooper's souls.

What does parry do in Deadlock? Parry in Deadlock stuns an enemy who melees you while it is up, for about two seconds per Esports.gg; it does nothing against bullets or abilities.

What should I buy first in Deadlock? In Deadlock, beginners should follow the shop's default or community builds (Dexerto); the most common first buys measured in Oct 2026 were Restorative Shot, Monster Rounds, High-Velocity Rounds and Extra Regen.

When can I play Ranked in Deadlock? Deadlock's Ranked mode needs 60 Standard wins, and you may only pick heroes you have won 15 Standard games with, at least three of them.

How do I get into Deadlock? Deadlock is an invite-only playtest: a Steam friend who has it invites you from the game's menu, as the Steam page explains; see How to Get an Invite.
