Soul Urn
Deadlock's Soul Urn spawns at 10 minutes and every 5 minutes after at one end of the map; a hero picks it up with a melee hit and carries it to the drop-off at the opposite end for 250 souls plus 70 per minute of match time and 4 permanent buffs (rules since Jun 30, 2026).
The Soul Urn is a Deadlock objective you carry: since Valve's Jun 30, 2026 update it spawns at 10, 15, 20, 25 minutes and so on at one end of the map, a hero picks it up with a melee hit and runs it to the drop-off at the opposite end, and the delivery pays that runner 250 souls plus 70 per minute of match time, released as orbs, along with 4 permanent buffs. Enemies knock it loose with any melee hit, a stun or a kill, and it decays if the run takes too long. Valve rebuilt the Urn several times between May and Jul 2026; the rules here are those in force on Oct 26, 2026, in an invite-only playtest that is still changing.

When and where it spawns
The Urn spawns at 10 minutes and every 5 minutes after: 10, 15, 20, 25 and onward, Valve's Jun 30, 2026 notes say. It appears at one end of the map, "where the previous neutral pickup locations were", and is delivered to the opposite end.
Mobalytics' Urn guide (Oct 10, 2026) says it alternates between the York (yellow, left) and Greenwich (green, right) side lanes, starting in York at 10:00, near the side lane's bridge. The minimap marks whether the Urn is favored, neutral or unfavored for your team, a feature from Valve's Mar 6, 2026 update. The Map and Lanes page shows the lanes.
How it works
You pick the Urn up by hitting it with a Light or Heavy Melee, a rule Valve introduced on May 22, 2026 in place of standing still to channel. Once you hold it, you cannot drop it on purpose, and you cannot parry.
The runner loses the Urn to any melee hit, a stun or death, and it stays where it falls. Since Jun 30, 2026 it "does not walk back home" when dropped, so either team can pick it up from there. Going through a doorway or Mirage's teleport also drops it.
The runner is not marked for the enemy. Since Jun 30, 2026 the Urn runner is not revealed, disarmed or silenced, so you can still shoot and cast while carrying it. The Urn gives you away by sound instead: it talks every 6 seconds and is easier for nearby enemies to hear since Jul 9, 2026.
The Urn will not wait forever. Its bounty starts decaying 45 seconds after it is picked up, drains over another 45 seconds, and the Urn is removed when it is empty. If nobody picks it up, after 3 minutes from spawn it starts walking very slowly toward the deposit point on its own (Jun 30, 2026).
Delivery is instant. Since Jun 30, 2026 the Urn is deposited the moment the runner reaches the drop-off point, with no capture phase to defend.
What it pays
The Urn pays its runner most. The deposit is worth 250 souls plus 70 per minute of match time for the runner alone, with a comeback component for a trailing team, per Valve's Jun 30, 2026 notes. On deposit all the souls are released as orbs into the air, and if an ally secures some, they share that bounty with the runner. The runner also gets 4 permanent buffs.
Those numbers make the first Urn worth about 950 souls. Mobalytics (Oct 10, 2026) gives a base of 950 souls at 10:00 and 350 more for each later spawn, which matches Valve's formula: 250 plus 70 times 10 minutes is 950, and each 5 minutes adds 350.
The 4 permanent buffs replaced an Ability Point. Since Valve's Nov 21, 2025 update, delivering the Urn gives 4 permanent buffs instead of +1 Ability Point (Ability Points and Leveling). The Souls and Economy page covers how permanent buffs and comeback bounties work.
The runner's bonuses
The runner moves faster, and faster still when the team is behind. Since Jul 9, 2026, the runner gets +2 m Move Speed and +25% Stamina Recovery, and a trailing team's runner gets +5 m Sprint on top. Since Jun 30, 2026 these bonuses scale with how far behind the team is, from nothing at even net worth to the full bonus at 15% behind, the same scale as the Unstable Rift.
The bonuses have shrunk over the summer. Valve's May 25, 2026 patch gave the runner +2 m Sprint, +1 Stamina, +10% Dash Distance and +15% Stamina Regen, and +4 m Sprint more when behind; the Jul 9 update took the Sprint bonus to 0 (5 m when trailing, from 7 m) and Move Speed from +3.5 m to +2 m.
How teams contest it
Guides treat the Urn as a team play, not a solo errand. Mobalytics (Oct 10, 2026) advises pushing your wave just before the Urn spawns, having teammates escort the runner, using the Urn as bait, and leaving your lane only if your lane partner can hold it. Mobalytics' movement guide calls dash jumping a must for the runner (Movement and Combat).
Stopping a runner takes only one hit of the right kind. Any light or heavy melee, or any stun, drops the Urn where the runner stands, and the runner cannot parry the melee. Any hero with a stun can stop a runner from range; the Counter Items page lists items that stun.
The Urn competes with other objectives for the same minutes. Spawning every 5 minutes, it can land close to an Unstable Rift (about every 7 minutes) or a Mid-Boss window, and the Macro and Rotations page covers how teams choose; the Objectives and Mid-Boss and Rejuvenator pages have the alternatives.
History
The Urn has changed shape more than any other objective. In Dec 2024 carrying it fixed your move speed at 13 and its spawn alternated left and right, starting left. Between May 22 and Jun 30, 2026, Valve tested a run of new rules in public: melee pickups and a drop-off on the bridge in the middle of the map with a contested "Depositing" phase (May 22), a drop-off under a side-lane bridge (May 25), spawns at 12, 18, 24 and 30 minutes (May 28), and a king of the hill capture after delivery (Jun 4).
On Jun 30, 2026 Valve split the two ideas apart. The king of the hill capture became the Unstable Rift, a separate comeback objective that no longer needs an Urn delivery, and Urn running became its own objective again, with the rules on this page (Valve). The Jul 9, 2026 update then tuned the runner's bonuses and the Urn's voice.

Movement and CombatDeadlock heroes move with stamina-based dashes and air jumps, free slides, wall jumps, mantles and out-of-combat sprint, and fight with guns, abilities, light and heavy melee and a parry that stuns an attacking meleer. Most heroes have 3 stamina, a ground dash covers 10 meters and a dash jump 19, and headshots deal 1.65 times damage (Valve's notes and the game files, as of Oct 26, 2026).
